The difference between Private Proxies and Public Proxies.
If you are like most internet users out there, you probably do not have a general idea on what a proxy server is and how one works. Most people associate proxy servers with a mean to get around those blocked-country websites but, there’s more to them.
Below I will highlight 2 of the most popular types of proxy servers out there.
What is a proxy server and how does it work?
Basically, a proxy server, is a computer that acts as an intermediary between you and a remote connection on the internet. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some information i.e. file, web page or a connection available from a different server and the proxy server evaluates the request as a way to simplify and control its complexity.
Public proxies
Just as the name implies, public proxies are a type of proxies that can be used by multiple users. Thus, if you want to use a public proxy, it might also be used by another person.
Although this type of proxies is not generally recommended, they have some advantages, such as:
- Most public proxies are free or inexpensive;
- Can support HTTP and SOCKSv5 service;
- Many public proxies are useful with some SEO tools, such as ScrapeBox, if you want to collect data from the internet.
- Public proxies can be used with web browsers and other applications that support proxy use.
Private Proxies
A private proxy server is a dedicated IP that is used exclusively by only one client at a time.
Private proxy servers have some noticeable advantages over public proxy servers, such as:
- It can be used by only one user;
- Increased security as you are the only user on that proxy server, offering you little concern about your personal information being compromised;
- Since no one else is using the proxy server, you take full advantage of its speed.
So, what sets them apart?
Speed
Public proxy – many users can jump on the same proxy at the same, overloading the bandwidth and thus your activity will be slowed down.
Private proxy – as this can only be assigned to one user, you will not suffer from bandwidth overload and the result is a higher speed than a public proxy server offers. We can see in the following video the difference in speed between these 2, when using Scrape Box.
Security
There is not much to say in favor of the Public proxy server regarding security as most of them are not reliable, they can and most of time crash rapidly and in worst cases, can contain malicious code that can compromise your personal information. Also, it is worth mentioning to say that many popular proxy providers have been found to leak data.
However, private proxies shine in this department because you are the only client using it and you face little to no risk of having your personal information compromised. Also, it is almost impossible for anyone to hack or install any type of malware on your system.
Reliability
Many of the public proxies are free for everyone to use and most of the time, many users jump on the same proxy as you are, which will lead to bandwidth overload and cause the server to crash; sometimes these proxies only last for a few minutes and burn out.
Private proxies however, are dedicated to you and last considerably longer as you are the only user on those proxies.
Anonymity
Public proxies have no guarantee that they will indeed hide your IP address. Many of them can also leak data or contain malicious software that can compromise your personal information. For example, let’s say you want to verify your bank account and you are using a free proxy. When you type your log in credentials, these can be intercepted.
Private proxies on the other hand, will basically guarantee that your IP address will stay anonymous.
Technical Support
With public proxies, most of the time you have little to no support if you encounter issues or, in worst scenarios, if your information was compromised because of a free proxy.
On the other hand, when using private proxies, most of the providers offer a clear understanding on their Terms of Service and most of them, offer 24/7 support regarding any issues you might face.
Costs
Considering the above, from my point of view there is basically one viable option between these 2 and I would definitely go with private proxies but, cost is a sensitive subject and in the end, it comes down to you and your needs. If you are not interested in the benefits of a private proxy and all you need is a lot of free proxies, then you can go for public proxies. If you want to avoid all those risks and the time it takes to test free proxies, then private proxy is the answer.
To wrap things up…
Whenever you connect to the internet, regardless of what activity you are performing, whether you are playing games, downloading a MP3 from the web, checking your e-mails, or simply browsing, your IP address allows for all of these activities to be tracked. In order to do all of this anonymously, you will need to hide this IP address and you can do this by using a proxy server.
When working with sensitive information, your top priority should be securing your privacy. Using a trusted proxy server will allow you to avoid being compromised.
Public proxies are often free but, as many of us know, nothing ever comes free and proxy servers make no exception. You put yourself to high risks whenever you use a public proxy. Those risks include hackers, censorship or online identity theft.
