Developing at Deliveroo

Today marks my 1yr anniversary at Deliveroo, not a hugely significant landmark — there won’t be a ceremony in the office.  What is significant is that the central Learning and Development team was established just a couple of months earlier with the remit to deliver companywide development programmes to employees - and this is precisely what it has done.

As a tech company, we hire talented people and move quickly.  It’s easy to assume that talented people will work on their own development.  But in a busy environment, focusing on your own development often has a lower priority.  Of course, there is learning on the job, but if a company is serious about people development, it must also make learning easy and accessible to all.  This is the journey we are on at Deliveroo.

Core global programmes have been launched in a little over a year, and the results are great.

  • People Manager training is available to all people managers - in the first year, 80% of managers attended the programme recommendation is 9.5/10
  • Presenting with Presence recently launched to all employees, and the schedule for 2023 is full with all sessions completely filled - class rating 9.6/10
  • All employees are invited to join our onboarding programme, which starts before they even walk into the office
  • We support all employees in the creation of their personal development plan so that they can own their own development path (>55% of employees are currently working on their PDP)
  • Our future leaders' programme currently has cohorts running in Europe and APAC, with a third cohort launching later in 2023
  • Our global mentoring programme is available to all employees
  • We offer 1:1 professional coaching with highly experienced coaches to our senior employees
  • Our Accelerate for Women Leaders is available globally and is expanding in 2023

Digital learning is core to our goal of democratising learning by making it available to all, and in 2023, Deliveroo employees have consumed over 20,000 hours of digital content.

Perhaps the most impressive stat is that this was delivered by a team of 4 - Christine Munk , Laura Gilbey , Sabine Anete Vasina , and myself.

As strong as this team is, we can only deliver what we do through strong collaboration with colleagues and true partnership with external experts.  Thank you to Maynard Leigh, Executive Coaching Consultancy, Clarity Leadership, Go1, O'Reilly, Docebo, CultureAmp, Chronus, and the excellent individual coaches who support us.

The programmes delivered by this team are only part of the learning story at Deliveroo - colleagues in our Commercial, Editions, DEI, and Care learning teams offer even more development opportunities to our global teams.
