To build successful cloud-native solutions, we need to stop viewing these roles as interchangeable and start seeing them as a collaborative ecosystem.
Here is a breakdown of how the responsibilities map out:
1. The Strategists 🔭
1.1. Enterprise Architect: The guardian of the "helicopter view." They ensure IT initiatives align with business goals and report directly to leadership, often using frameworks like TOGAF.
1.2.Domain Architect: The owner of a specific area (like Cloud). They define the roadmap and oversee domain-specific initiatives that span multiple projects.
2. The Orchestrator 🧩
2.1.Solution Architect: The bridge between business requirements and technical implementation. They possess "T-shaped" skills—deep knowledge in one area but broad enough to collaborate across all others. They define the Business (Level 0), Technical (Level 1), and Deployment (Level 2) architectures.
3. The Specialists 🛠️
3.1. Technical Architect: Deep vertical knowledge. They are hands-on, coaching developers and refining the internal mechanics of specific technologies (e.g., zooming inside an AKS cluster).
3.2. Infrastructure Architect: The master of "Landing Zones" and networking. They bridge the on-premise and cloud worlds through hybrid topologies.
3.3. Security Architect: Moves us from perimeter-based security to identity-based Zero Trust. They ensure compliance and manage vertical security risks.
3.4. Data Architect: Manages the journey up the DIKW pyramid (Data -> Information -> Knowledge -> Wisdom).
