Data and ROI

Data and ROI are always at loggerheads. Investment needs to be made in Data's foundational assets to generate future ROI but immediate ROI is almost zero for investments in foundational assets.

This is a tricky conversation that generally creeps in the IT (spec architects) and the business discussions. There is a need to have a balance between current and future aspirations.

Every organization aspires to be data driven. But the data journey towards data driven is not an easy one.

Data Journey

Every Organization aspires to become Data Driven to improve the business decision making and reduce the Time To Market (TTM). Most of the organizations are either in Data Proficient or Data Savvy Stage. But the step up towards the Data Driven is a challenge and there is great need for foundational data assets that will reduce the data silos and duplicate extraction pipelines.

One of the basic foundational data assets is creation of Data Lake. Data Lake ensures that the raw data is available for exploration. This will reduce the Time To Explore (TTE) the data for the requirements. Organization spend too much time and effort identifying the sources where the data resides for their requirement.

One of the approach can be

  1. Identify the top 10 (or more) sources in each of the Countries (if it is multiple country).
  2. Ingest the Raw data with identified history (depending on compliance & legal requirements) in the Data Lake.
  3. The 3rd step can be given in 2 steps in consultation with Business. This can be run in parallel.

  • The reporting Mart can source data from the data lake and the Business/IT can explore it and identify the Quality issues.
  • Create a standardized layer in between the Data Lake and Reporting Mart. The various consumption applications need a consistent layer. Hence the standardized layer will provide a consistent & semantic layer.

You need to spend money on the bricks of the foundation to raise the altar of your temple
