Data Lab launch CPD boot camp for data scientists

We are delighted to launch the first Data Lab professional development boot camp in collaboration with The Data Incubator, a leading US data science training organisation with clients such as Capital One, Pfizer and LinkedIn, led by Michael Li.

Over the past year our education programme has focussed on nurturing new talent, from sponsoring students to facilitating industry placements and scaling this with Data Talent Scotland. Increasing the talent pool of talented graduates is valuable; however, as the use of data to drive insight and decision making becomes increasingly important to many organisations there is also a need and an opportunity to develop existing talent.  For example, think about your employees who may have one or more of the following:

  • A key area of focus such as statistics, programming or data engineering, and need to broaden their development.
  • A priceless knowledge of your business domain (something graduates won’t have) and need technical training.
  • Great technical skills on legacy platforms and need to develop in the latest technologies.
  • Started to develop an interest in data science for your business and would benefit from an intensive accelerator.

The boot camp will be an intensive three week programme run during September in Edinburgh.  Three core areas will be covered (1 per week):

  • Introduction to data science: Development and application of skills in data manipulation and processing used in data science through the Python programming language and core libraries such as panda, numpy and matplotlib.
  • Introduction to machine learning: Development and application of skills in regression, classification, model evaluation metrics, overfitting, variance versus bias, ensemble methods, model selection and hyper parameter optimisation.  Python will be used with key libraries such as scikit-learn.
  • Visualisation: Development and application of tools for data exploration and presentation including Python libraries (matplotlib, seaborn), d3.js and end to end dashboard analytics libraries such as bokeh and pyxley.

The programme has a strong focus and weighting on developing practical application skills in a collaborative environment, building on key taught content.  Each module will build upon the concepts of the previous one; however it will be possible to sign up for a subset of modules.

We’re genuinely excited to bring The Data Incubator team to Scotland to deliver this programme.  For further information and pricing contact skills@thedatalab.com
