Cyber Security Vs Cyber Intelligence

Cyber security (cybersecurity) and cyber intelligence are related but distinct concepts within the realm of information security. I'd do a breakdown of both using what I refer to as FCOP concept, that is, Focus-Components-Objectives-Practices.

Cyber Security refers to all process and tools required to protect digital assets. Below is the FCOP:

  1. Focus. Cyber security is basically concerned with protecting computer systems, networks, and data from unauthorised access, breaches, attacks, and damage. It's primary focus is on implementing safeguards and defensive measures to prevent, detect, and respond to security threats.
  2. Components. Cyber security encompasses a wide range of practices and technologies, and these are referred to as components. They include firewalls, intrusion detection systems, encryption, access controls, antivirus software, and security policies and procedures.
  3. Objective. The key objective of cyber security is to maintain the confidentiality, integrity, and availability (CIA) of digital assets and to ensure the that systems and networks are operational and remain so.
  4. Practices. Cyber security involves activities such as patch management, vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, threat mitigation, incident response planning, and security awareness training for employees.

Cyber Intelligence also know as a cyber threat intelligence is about gathering and analysing relevant information about cyber threats with a view to enhancing cyber security. We this in mind, let's explore the FCOP on cyber int.

  1. Focus. Cyber intelligence is more concerned about gathering, analysing, and disseminating information about cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities. It's about understanding the tactics, techniques, and procedures of cyber adversaries.
  2. Components. Cyber intelligence involves collecting data from various sources, such as open-source information, dark web forums, government agencies, and private sector sources. This data is analysed to provide actionable insights about cyber threats and trends.
  3. Objective. The key objective of cyber intelligence is to help organisations make informed decisions about their cyber security posture. It aids in understanding the threat landscape, identifying potential risks, and developing effective security strategies.
  4. Practices. Cyber intelligence practices include threat hunting, threat modelling, threat intelligence sharing, and the use of specialised tools and platforms for data collection and analysis.

Conclusively, cyber security is the practice of safeguarding digital assets, while cyber intelligence is the process of gathering, analysing, and using information about cyber threats to enhance cyber security efforts. Both are crucial components of a comprehensive cyber security strategy. Effective cyber security relies on understanding the evolving threat landscape, which is where cyber intelligence plays a vital role by providing actionable insights and threat intelligence.

Cyber intelligence is the control that Cyber security as the power needs to be super effective. This is based on Pirelli 's famous slogan, "Power is nothing without control".

Brilliantly broken down to the grain! Much appreciated Comdt! Cheers!
