On Creativity

Have you ever experienced a moment of epiphany during the most mundane tasks? Maybe while taking a shower or going for a jog? This is no coincidence. Your brain, is always working for behind the scenes, even when you least expect it.

How the Brain Thinks

At its heart, the brain is a prediction machine. It is constantly humming along making predictions of the future and thus creating a reality for us. With every piece of information it is trying to make sense of the world, drawing patterns and predicting the next thought.

Where Do Ideas Come From?

So then, where do ideas come from? Are they a result of deep thought, or do they spontaneously emerge from our minds? If you have any doubt, think about the last time you had a great idea, where did it come from? Did you sit down do deeply think about it, or was it a result of your mind wandering, or maybe an engaging conversation?

While active thought, and deep focus indeed plays a role, many of our ideas come from the subconscious processing of information and our brain drawing parallels, patterns and analogies in its attempt to predict what’s next.

The Brain as a Prediction Machine

If our ideas stem from this subconscious background activity, and our brain operates as a prediction machine, how can we harness this to generate more and better ideas? The secret lies in feeding our brain with a diverse range of information. The more varied and relevant the data it receives, the richer the predictions and patterns it can produce. Read books, articles, watch videos, documentaries, talk to people. The more you expose yourself to information on the topics you care about and topics adjacent, the more you give your brain the chance to have more diverse and creative ideas.

The Power of Diverse Thought

Just like a diverse team brings varied perspectives and solutions to a problem, feeding your brain diverse information enriches its prediction capabilities. This doesn't mean just reading books or articles in your field. Dive into a new hobby, learn a new language, or simply engage in conversations outside your usual circles. The broader your horizons, the more expansive your brain's prediction palette becomes.

Letting the Brain Work Its Magic: How to Wander Effectively

Ironically, to make the most of our brain's prediction prowess, we sometimes need to take a step back. Over-focusing or forcing creativity can be counterproductive. Instead, let your brain wander.

Begin by immersing yourself in a topic and then give your brain the space to roam freely. Engage in activities that occupy the conscious brain but leave the subconscious free to "noodle" or process information. Activities like walking, showering, or running are excellent catalysts for this. They distract the conscious mind enough to let the subconscious take the reins.

In essence, the next time you're seeking a spark of creativity or a solution to a problem, remember that your brain is always at work in the background. Feed it well with diverse thoughts, allow it space to breathe, and watch as it surprises you with insights when you least expect it.

Feel free to share your experiences or activities that have sparked your creativity in the comments below! Let's learn and grow together.

Love this perspective, Luis! The brain truly is a prediction machine, but I think a huge part of that comes from its interpretation power. If the brain isn't actively understanding and interpreting information, then that information is essentially null and void. As much as we need to feed it diverse content, it's also important to consume information that doesn’t require constant interpretation—after all, creativity is about forming unique combinations. The connections we create might resonate with others, or they might not. But does that mean we’re ahead of our time, or just missing something? That fine line between innovation and misinterpretation is such an interesting space to explore!

The best is when ideas come in dreams. I love it when that happens (especially when i remember them!).
