Continuing the Journey as a Software Developer

Today marks the beginning of my 8th week as a Software Engineering Fellow at General Assembly. This past week I built an app called Cheer Ups. The purpose of Cheer Ups is to brighten up the day of individuals who encounter the app. It has a database of quotes that are encouraging. I built this application with HTML, CSS, Node, HBS, JavaScript, MongoDB, Mongoose, ExpressJS, and deployed the app to Heroku. It has full REST/ CRUD functionality. When Users arrive to the app they encounter a carousel of cheers that are operated with right and left arrows. Users can create new encouraging quotes. They can also delete and edit posts.

I chose to build this app due to the current state of our Society. There’s a lot of negativity out there and I believe that if an individual can take one moment out of their busy day to do something nice for someone else, they can make a difference. This app makes sharing a single encouraging sentence very easy. I incorporated links to Facebook and Twitter so that individuals can share the app/quote on Social Media. I also incorporated a QR code so Users can access the app on mobile devices. It’s fulfilling to create something that actually makes a difference in the lives of others.

Making a difference in the lives of others will continually be part of my motto as I continue this journey as a Creative Software Engineer. I believe to create something out of nothing is a Super Power and in the words of Uncle Ben from Spider Man “With great power comes great responsibility”. As I continue to develop this ever evolving Super Power I will continue to create apps that have a positive effect on the lives of others. My next app will utilize the React Framework and I can’t wait to share it with you guys. In the meantime feel free to check out my Cheer Up app. What’s your superpower? Have you made a difference today?
