The Consultant’s Magic Wand

The Consultant’s Magic Wand

In his book Humble Consulting, while providing consulting services for two executives, Dr. Edgar Schien was reminded of the quote, “You get what you settle for” (2016). This statement resonates with me for many reasons, notably in the context of Human Resource Development (HRD). Whether one is a seasoned business professional, a vice president, manager or line staff, when faced with chronic office challenges, what does one do? These blockages may stem from communication gaps, staff motivational issues or inefficient processes. Until a decision is made to actually do something about the problems, they will remain, likely indefinitely. Perhaps hiring a consultant may be the perceived solution? They have all the answers, right?

HRD professionals acting as consultants will of necessity engage with diverse groups and cultures with varied work experiences and differing motivational levels. Without having direct control to actually implement change, a consultant works with individuals or organizations to share their expertise by analyzing expressed challenges to support leadership in meeting goals, enhancing process improvements or strengthening interactions.

Addressing chronic office challenges cannot be done in a vacuum. The consultant needs the client fully engaged in the process. She or he is not hired to simply discharge advice but to act as a guide, creating unbiased space for leaders to introspect and come up with solutions.

As identified by Block, the collaborative approach to problem solving has proven to be most successful, as the client sees the consultant not as the only key, but simply as a component of the problem solving process (2011). This approach encourages the team not to rely on a consultant to wave a magic wand to fix the problems, but instead at all levels to adapt, change and grow to make the organization better.
