Considerations in SaaS Integration: Mitigating Risks

In the current dynamic environment, expediting the development of features and functionalities often involves leveraging various SaaS tools. This approach prioritizes addressing the core business value instead of dedicating resources to tasks readily available through subscription services. When evaluating a product, we commonly consider:

  • The breadth of features offered
  • The depth of the features
  • Ease of use
  • Integrations to other software tools
  • Performance capabilities
  • Cost-effectiveness
  • Reliability and downtime occurrences
  • Scalability to manage unexpected demands
  • Availability of support

Based on this information, we aim to determine whether to opt for purchasing or building a solution. For minimal usage, services with usage-based pricing prove more advantageous initially. However, as usage and volume grow, transitioning to an in-house solution becomes more favourable.

We overlook assessing the associated risks and necessary mitigation strategies. While dealing with SaaS, there's an anticipation or assumption that the software will seamlessly integrate with other systems, including our in-house product, to enhance value for our end clients. Every product is intervened with other products to provide value, in this intricate landscape, it's crucial to evaluate the risks associated with these connectors failing and their potential impact on clients. To avert risks, ensuring the chosen SaaS solution enables:

  • Active monitoring of connections and integrations
  • Comprehensive, searchable logs of third-party connections
  • Setup for connectivity issue alerts
  • Regular code updates for connectivity
  • Transparent insights into connectivity processes
  • Reliable fallback options

Security also needs to be considered to finalize the product.
