Coffee flavored coffee!
Viz by Me, coffee export raw data by ICO.org

Coffee flavored coffee!

I am a coffee snob and a data nerd. I have a Google Sheet with all the coffee I've tried in 2016, scored by my personal opinion of flavor, as well as bean origin and brew method. It is a tedious life to live but if I don't document my coffee journey, I will never be able to keep up with the Big Brew Board at Zingermann's in Ann Arbor.

Today I spent about an hour working on a data visualization in Google's Data Studio that paired my two aforementioned interests; coffee and analytics! To my delight, there is a rather robust data set available for free via ICO.org. This included a broad range of import/export, domestic consumption, retail pricing, and prices paid to farmers and many other data. I decided to stick with just export data and noticed a few interesting points.

  1. Vietnam is the world's second largest exporter of coffee beans.
  2. Honduras produces a large volume of beans relative to the size of the country and other exports. To put it in perspective, Brazilian coffee exports account for 2% of all exports in Brazil, Honduras coffee exports account for 10% of all exports in Honduras. Does the whole country run on coffee? Honduras is also expanding it's export of coffee at twice the rate of Brazil. Grow, baby, grow!
  3. Exports of coffee are well above 2005, down since last year. Although there is high variance in growth between countries.
  4. There are winners and losers; some countries, like Brazil and Vietnam have increased their rate of export growth as demand increased. Other countries, like Thailand, have seen decreases in coffee exports. This may be due to trade agreements that make it more appealing to buyers to source beans domestically rather than pay a massive duty for imported coffee.
  5. Robusta beans are less desireable than arabica beans.
  6. Google Data Studio finally has automatic align and distribution of visuals!
  7. I want to know where exporters are sending their coffee but I do not want to spend the time investigating it. :)

I hope you've enjoyed this and if you'd like to take a deeper dive into the visual snapped in the cover photo, check it out on Google Data Studio. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go grab a cup of coffee.
