CLOUD COMPUTING ...COMPUTERS IN THE CLOUD?

On the last articles on Low-code/No-code part 2, we did touch on the fact that low-code app development platform (specifically the Salesforce lightning platform) operates on the cloud in its entirety. Now in this article we will expand more on that. Over the last few years, we have heard or there have been terms floating around about cloud and cloud computing. But what is it and why should we concern ourselves with it? In simple terms cloud is a vast collection of data on the internet while cloud computing is about storing and processing that data over the internet instead of on a computer hard drive. But why though? Why would you choose cloud computing to begin with?

Cloud computing's main advantage is that when working online on a file, that file can be accessed anywhere using either laptop, tablet or even phones if one has internet connection. One can do work irrespective of where they are, from office, home, travelling or even in a coffee shop, meaning we can take our work with us everywhere. This is especially crucial in this time of covid-19. The other advantage to cloud computing is that we can store and process large amounts of data a lot faster compared to if one was using a computer and local storage devices.

And yes, all of us make use of cloud computing some way or another, using cloud services like Netflix, iTunes, Microsoft Office Online, uploading pictures on social media, cloud storage such as Dropbox, and Salesforce, the list goes on. However, you might be wondering if cloud computing or cloud services are safe. We have heard now and then about hackers hacking institutes like banks and so on. And that is why we have Cyber Security to protect our personal information, data on business processes and in general protecting data from malicious attacks. From an article written on ITWeb, it is shown that ‘South Africa suffers from cybercrimes, which has become more prevalent in South Africa, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic’.

This means that South Africa needs to work on its Cyber Security infrastructures if we want to prevent these cyber-attacks as the country moves towards 4IR in our businesses, farming, education, and the likes. Another way to prevent these cyber-attacks is to have strict cybercrime laws and invest in cyber security as a country. As someone who uses social media, pays bills using the phone, buying and paying stuff online, studying online this affects me as much as the next person.
