Cloud & Composable Infrastructure - Future
Good Day! All,
From the days of physical servers, we moved to virtualization, which paved new window of opportunities for cloud and remain as foundation stone for cloud model of business. Now where will cloud move??, we all know the obvious answer, cloud may move or mature into Software Defined Infrastructure, Software Defined Data Center.............. But when? Why it is not happening so fast??. When, I contemplate, I see a missing link most of the time in the whole equation.
The missing link is that "The composability of the Infrastructure" in the cloud. In cloud we automate everything, Provisioning,Deprovisioning etc..etc. But it is possible with in the infrastructure. Is the the cloud as a whole infrastructure composable from outside of cloud. May be not as of now today. Now many infrastructure vendors started talking about composable infrastructure , Such as IBM, HP, CISCO and may more. So it is very obvious composable infrastructure is going to be future of cloud. With in very short span of time, the cloud will mature into composable infrastructure which will pave way for SDDC and SDI environment. So what is missing today ? what is being developed today ?
The above diagram is HP's Philosophy on composable infrastructure, I hope every one will agree with this. The HP's vision is that, the composable infrastructure has 3 major components,
- Fluid Resource Pools
- Software Defined Intelligence (SDI)
- Unified API
Fluid Resource Pools: Just nothing what we have in cloud today, Loosely available compute, network, storage resources in cloud which could be easily composed, decomposed and fit in to a software template for the VM definition.
Software Defined Intelligence, or SDI. SDI is a new interdisciplinary approach that integrates Compute, Storage, Networking, Security, Energy, and IoT. may be with Machine Learning in future.
Unified API: This will provide initial automation and integration of orchestration tools with today’s infrastructure in the cloud and converged system.
CISCO too betting big on Composble infrastructure. Cisco has slightly different approach, But the concept is same,
Infrastructure components are disaggregated at the hardware component and logical unit levels. The VIC extends the Cisco UCS fabric into the Cisco UCS M-Series Modular Servers, where all components communicate. Cisco System Link technology
disaggregates local storage and other components, making it easy to pool and share resources and optimize their performance.
Each component in a system exposes information about its features, functions, performance, groupings, and more, storing the detail in the object model and presenting them through the Cisco UCS management API
Cisco UCS Manager maintains an object repository for IDs and ID pools, policies, service profiles and templates, and connectivity templates to facilitate fluid resource pools. Each physical and logical unit is treated as an element in pools of resources.
Policies and service profiles generated by applications and workloads automate the allocation, configuration, and provisioning (composition and decomposition) of the infrastructure based on profiles. When an application or service requests resources to run, the resources are allocated based on availability.
So.. net-net All big players are trying to make the infrastructure as code and composable infrastructure is the key to realize that. In a dynamic business environment, business agility is critical to your success. Composable infrastructure will enable you do that.

Great read Arunachalam Jayaraman. Thanks for sharing Rajendren TGR . Stateless-ness and Self containment are the 2 keywords that will prevail. I wish to echo Anand Murthy | Presales | Cloud | Openstack | TOGAF. Infrastructure is already code with the docker technology !! and With Micro-services movement, it will further gain immense momentum. Orchestration will play a more important role in the new generation of softwares.
"business agility is critical to your success." Couldn't agree more & in concurrence with IBM--to constantly reinvent!
Good one!

10ynice article, infrastructure will be treated more in version, code wise which will be make it easy for composable.
