Chef Engineers in Belfast......
Along with most of the rest of the software development companies in Belfast, we have some positions open for SDEs. Any engineer in the Product and Engineering group in Chef is termed an SDE, these particular roles sit within our Solutions and Content Engineering team in Belfast and involve working across the entire lifecycle of what we do in Chef and what our customers need to be successful. Although we use the term Software Development Engineers, we don’t hire developers or QA or build/release engineers, we hire talented engineers and they become Chefs, which means they will be able to handle a project from start to maintenance phase. Calling people Chefs internally sounded a little corny when I first arrived in the company, I have to say I’ve grown to love the term, a good Chef is someone that understands the software development process in a DevOps culture, from start to finish - they can create the Github repo, they can add a build pipeline or fold it into an existing one, they create the automated tests and docs around that repo, they experiment with creation of an MVP and iterate over it with feedback from internal and external customers, the are able to have time to experiment and gain feedback over their initial designs and update the implementation based on this feedback at the appropriate time and using the knowledge they have gained. We don’t expect you to do all of that at the same time and we also don’t expect a less experienced engineer to just pick up and run with the full pipeline remit and do it naturally, we have patterns to follow, graduated methods of teaching these patterns and a bunch of very pleasant and sensible Chefs already here that want to share our methods and also take your feedback as to how you think those patterns could be improved - so don’t stress, we’ll teach you and learn from you.
As an SDE in Solutions and Content Engineering you’ll be using some or all of the following as you progress through the various pipelines of work - Ruby, Python, GoLang, Bash, Powershell Github, Git, Azure DevOps, Chef, InSpec, Habitat, Terraform, Docker, Jenkins, Travis, BuildKite, AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes. We’ll start you off gradually and work you through various bodies of tasks to ensure you pick up our tools and products at a sensible pace and start adding value back into the team at a sensible rate so you feel valuable and needed by the Chefs around you and ensure you have a sense of achievement over the months and years that you’re here.
We put a large amount of faith in our Chefs, once you have been hired we default to trust, we ensure you have the correct level of information to stay aligned with the rest of the company and trust that you are doing the right thing to add value for our customers in line with the objectives we communicate to you. We also trust that you’ll respectfully interact with the team around you and the other teams within the company to ensure you have the right level of information, you’re reaching out and receiving the right level of help and feedback and that you understand why a certain direction has been taken.
We have 8 engineers in Belfast to date, a 9th starts next week, plus myself, we’re hiring 4 more SDEs and another support engineer at present and we’ve started the search for more permanent offices before we burst out of the Scottish Provident Building, we’ll be staying in the centre of Belfast though!
