C Programming Contest
The second event of the C Programming Month being celebrated in the School of Computer and Information Sciences (SCIS), University of Hyderabad , is a "C Programming Contest." Coordinated by Dr. Anjeneya Swami Khare, the contest was held on Saturday, 10 September. It was hosted on HackerRank and contained three problems requiring a good understanding of not just the C language but also algorithms. The first problem required knowledge of sorting and binary search; the second, dynamic programming, and the third, branch-and-bound or at least intelligent search. Time given was 3 hours.
About 36 students registered for the contest but only 18 participated, possibly due to persistant and continual rain throughout the day and the previous night. What is encouraging is that the participants ranged from almost freshers to graduate students.
The contest started precisely on time at 2 PM and ran until 5 PM. The code had to run on about 10 test cases each for the three problems given. In the end, once again, Jatin Dehmiwal, a 2nd year student of the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) program took the first place. The second place was shared by two students, Vineetha from M. Tech (CS) programme and Bal Bhuvan Varma from Integrated M. Tech programme. The third position was also shared by two students - Spandan Dasgupta of M. Tech (CS) and Diddi Manish of Integrated M. Tech. Meher Sai, a student of 2nd semester Integrated M. Tech programme, received a special mention for being able to solve two problems without yet doing any courses on algorithms.

Once again, hearty congratulations to all the participants for their enthusiasm, to all the volunteers for their tireless work and the faculty who attended the event for providing extra support and encouragement to the participants.
The next event is a university-wide Quiz generally related to the C language.
I remember the first day in the AI lab, where we were assigned to reverse a singly linked list. That was a late but great start to programming and developing my skills and confidence. Not to forget your unique assignments in the Multi-core computing course ( C program with the smallest bytes of storage, which allowed us to explore all types of unconventional and crazy operators in C to reduce the number of lines of code). In the future, I am sure these students will remember and be thankful for these activities, just like me. Thank you for your keen focus on the basics!
Good to see such contests being held at SCIS
Congrats Jatin Dehmiwal
