Big data! The Taste-maker for Internet of things.

Big data! The Taste-maker for Internet of things.

Without big data analytic, companies are blind and deaf, wandering out onto the Web like deer on a free-way- Geoffrey Moore

IoT (internet of things/every things) is THE business case which can be seen in every organisation's roadmap section these days. If you take some time and type any company's name + IoT you will material to kill some time for sure. People are discussing about LTE -M, D2D communications and what not to show how their existing infra can help build IoT. May be nothings wrong in this, they are just trying to associate their roadmap/product line with "Next Big Thing", good for them.

What's all the Hype about:

IoT alone is as simple as:

  • Machine to Machine communication, Bluetooth does the same with phone.
  • Data gathering sensors, thermometer measures room temperature.
  • Connected world/ items/ everything with one unique identification which nobody till knows what that identity be with all the connected things may be soft sim, may be private IP pool or may serial number connected to your phone app.
  • The cloud: off course everyone's favourite , someone's giant server computer.

But does this all make sense, everyday all the organisations are coming up and writing about how their products help to solve IoT's requirement but what about the basic infrastructure are we ready? Do we have everything in place?

  • Dimensioning of B/H, Bandwidth, access technologies, management of each layer.
  • Dimensioning of number of devices and how they connect
  • Security, vulnerability to attack, more devices connected gives more doors/tools kit to the hackers to play.
  • Connected does not mean efficient, what is the need?
  • Most importantly the data analytic.Big data

I have something you need you have something I want :  "Data! Data! Data! I can’t make bricks without clay!"

All the data coming out of all sensors, your equipments (fridge, washing machine, AC, cars, phone etc.) is garbage without Big data analysis. IoT sensors, devices collect data then what? Isn't is the same way now?

  • My health app on phone tells me how much I walked ate, slept, heartbeat.
  • My car's stereo with blue tooth knows to connect my phone.
  • For that sake how many of us use the smart TV for other capable things than " Watching TV".

He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp posts – for support rather than for illumination.

The big deal is not getting connected and extracting data from every damn thing we touch or use, its about how to make use of the same generated data. It not only the "Data" which will make things happen but also the insight of data which makes machine smarter , take better decisions (not real life sky-net terminators :-) ). Thus out of many critical needs and driving forces, Data analysis is the most important ingredient , "the taste maker of IoT". The goal is to turn data into information, and information into insight.

Awesome Thoughts, we have been taught about the energy Losses, But in real Life there are now repeatedly happening the term i call it as "Data Losses" and "Decision Losses Based on the Data" in-consequently Loosing Business or Loosing Opportunity to do Business..

Awesome thouths....you are exactly right if we will not see the insights of gathered data then it will be garbage in and garbage out thing and Hence no smart of using the data..
