Beyond Coding: How No-Code Technologies Can Drive Organizational Change at Scale
Here's a thought that might surprise you: in today's digital age, if you consider yourself a "non-technical" person when it comes to computers, you're basically wrong -- excuse the hot take, let me explain....
Launch your mind back a hundred years—computers were the stuff of science fiction, radio was king. Zoom forward to today, and they're as ubiquitous as the air we breathe, a cornerstone of every aspect of our personal, educational, and professional lives. We are (and have been) drenched in a figurative sea of data, code, and now AI.
Even those of us who don't code for a living have amassed a set of computer skills through school, personal life and work life, and while we might consider them basic, they have the potential to power significant transformations when leveraged through no-code technologies.
I won't spare you my most controversial statement: "No one working in a modern organization is truly non-technical". We all possess the foundation. What we need to do for future success (individually and organizationally) is to build on it.
Think of this: Nobody who can work a Teams chat lacks the skills to harness and make use of one of the most powerful AI capabilities available today (ChatGPT - a "no-code" AI tool).
If you have to, consider your current "Non-technical" skills (Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook, Salesforce, Teams, Jira, Adobe, etc.) as "soft skills for computing".
I feel strongly about the potential of all of us in this boat because I was that person with "Non-technical" skills before I learned the power of no-code technology. Eventually I learned how code, APIs, "data" and "AI" worked later along my educational journey, but to make real change all I needed (and still need, in most cases) is configurable software.
My first big success with no-code came through the employment of ArcGIS Enterprise, a software solution near and dear to my heart because it empowered myself and hundreds of Airmen like myself to become absolute conquerors in the arena of digital transformation.
When we first recognized the potential of this method, we applied the newly found software against our problems, and the result was like Excel on rocket fuel, because to be honest, Excel was our bread and butter foundation for how we all knew to use computers, if I'm being honest, none of us really knew you could take a table and put it on a map before we found ArcGIS.
When we recognized the potential of no-code, our small team of pioneers in this skillset developed and taught a two week course that brought non-technical Airmen from zero to hero in the field of data visualization, C.R.U.D. web application development and an overall transformative employment of geospatial technology through no-code configuration.
Today, I'm just a guy who learned enough to be dangerously effective, but I also observe this same quality in over 100 Airmen I've trained personally along with the hundreds more who will continue to sharpen the sickle that is the no-code digital weaponry of ArcGIS through this same training system.
This journey from tech apprehension to digital innovation didn't just change the way we worked; it changed how we perceived ourselves and our potential to create impact. And the best part? It's a path that's open to everyone (individuals and organizations). The only requirement is the willingness to explore, experiment and implement.
