AWS - Changing the Cloud Trajectory
AWS has been the pioneer in cloud computing. Starting with launching the first public cloud services in 2006 it has always been known for innovating new services and adding new feature to its cloud services. Every year in Nov timeframe AWS host its customers and partners for a grand event named re:Invent. The re:Invent is the launchpad for innovations at AWS some of which are generally available from re:Invent or slated for launch in coming months.
Was it any different last year? Yes, I would say and remarkably.
Till date innovation and growth of cloud computing has been mostly around compute and storage services. This got augmented by cloud native databases and later including the IoT and AI services in later years. This re:Invent, AWS changed the trajectory of application of cloud services by introducing services like AWS Ground Station, AWS Outpost, Amazon Quantum Ledger Database, Amazon Textract to name a few.
So how are these services different from previous launches and how it will help in changing cloud trajectory?
AWS Ground Station is actually taking the cloud services beyond cloud to satellites. We all know that satellites generate huge amount of data and needs to be processed at very high rate. Ground station is fully managed satellite ground stations to collect and process information from the thousands of orbiting satellites around the world. Just imagine what it would take to setup a dedicated satellite ground station in real-time once a disaster or a calamity strikes?
AWS Outpost is really an out of the world thinking. It might appear simple and straight forward, but it has eliminated the need for expanding your DC in its current form. Outpost brings the native AWS services and infrastructure to virtually any datacenter, co-location spaces and gives you a true hybrid cloud environment. With one service AWS has erased the boundary between on-prem, hybrid and public cloud. I am sure other cloud service providers will follow soon.
Amazon Quantum Ledger Database provides a fully managed transparent and immutable ledger database. Ever since the Blockchain came into existence there has been tremendous research and development is developing application to cater new use cases across industries. Amazon QLDB will provide the required fuel to fast track Blockchain adoption coupled with AWS managed Blockchain service.
Amazon Textract has the required power to digitize the entire manual records. It enables you to extract text and data from virtually any document. Just imagine the medical records, court case papers or government documents all getting digitized and available for data scientist to discover new patterns? It is a game changer and has immense potential
The above are few examples which takes the cloud computing beyond regular compute, storage and database thinking and forces to re-imagine the power of cloud to create a new digital world. An entirely new trajectory of Cloud computing world!
