App Launch Checklist

App Launch Checklist

You've built your app, tested it thoroughly, and you're ready to launch. But between "Development complete" and "Live on Play Store" 90% of apps fail due to poor launch.

So here’s your checklist of things before launching one’s app on Play store.

Pre-Launch Technical Essentials

  • Testing Beyond Functionality: Your app works on your device, but have you tested it on Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and other popular Android devices? Test on at least 10 different devices spanning various price points, screen sizes, and Android versions (9 to 15). Don't forget to test on low RAM devices—they're still common.
  • Performance Optimization: Indian users are sensitive to app size and data usage. Keep your APK under 50MB for initial download. Optimize images and assets. Test on 3G networks, not just WiFi. If your app takes more than 3 seconds to become usable, you'll lose users before they even try it.
  • Crash-Free Experience: Your app will break, and you want to know about errors before your users tell you, or worse, before they just leave and never come back. Integrate crash reporting tools like Firebase Crashlytics before launch.

Play Store Optimization

  • App Name and Description: Your app name has 30 characters—use them wisely. Include your primary keyword naturally. The short description (80 characters) appears in search results—make it compelling.
  • Visual Assets Matter: Your app icon is your first impression. Make it distinctive, clear at small sizes, and memorable. Screenshots should tell a story—don't just show screens, show the value. Use text overlays to highlight key features.
  • Category and Tags: Choose your primary category carefully—it determines who discovers your app. Be specific and relevant.

Legal and Compliance

  • Privacy Policy (Non-Negotiable): Google requires a privacy policy URL for apps that access sensitive data. Host it on your website. Clearly state what data you collect, how you use it, and user rights. Non-compliance can get your app rejected or removed.
  • Permissions: Only request permissions you actually need. Explain why you need each permission when requesting it. Users are increasingly cautious about granting permissions.

Launch Strategy

  • Soft Launch First: Don't go live globally on day one. Launch in select cities or states first. Monitor crashes, user feedback, and performance metrics.
  • Version 1.0 Should Be Stable: Resist the urge to pack every feature into version 1.0. Launch with core functionality that works flawlessly. It's better to add features in updates than launch with bugs.
  • Response Plan: Have a system to respond to user reviews within 24 hours. Address negative reviews professionally and fix reported issues quickly.

Post-Launch Monitoring

  • Day 1-7 is Critical: Monitor crash rates, Application Not Responding rates, and uninstall rates obsessively. Google's algorithm notices these metrics immediately.
  • Rating Management: Prompt satisfied users to rate your app, but do it at the right moment—after they've experienced value, not immediately after download. Never interrupt critical user flows to ask for ratings.
  • Update Strategy: Plan your first update within 2-3 weeks of launch. It shows users and Google that you're actively maintaining the app. Include bug fixes, minor improvements, and acknowledge user feedback in update notes.

The Reality Check

Most apps fail not because of poor functionality but because of poor launch execution. Your app competes with millions of others. Play Store success requires technical excellence, strategic positioning, and continuous improvement.
