Android Ransomware

I saw today in ARN: “More than 25 per cent of all reported malware in May was Android ransomware, according to security company, Bitdefender.” What would you pay go get back all the photos on your smartphone? Are they backed up? Ransomware is continually finding new ways to lock up what matters to you, and hold it to ransom. And there's no team of FBI agents watching you drop a bag of unmarked bills into a bin, so they can grab the bad guys, thanks to BitCoin and other untraceable payment methods. Unlike the walled garden Apple AppStore, there is no vetting of apps on Google Play.

WatchGuard's APT Blocker checks the behaviour of APK files that you download from Google Play and provides immediate protection from ones that behave like malware. It is here that we find not all sandboxes are equal. Some don't scan APK files at all. Some don't provide protection until the AV signatures are updated next, sometimes up to an hour later. Make sure your next advanced malware purchase includes immediate protection of APK-based malware.
