All things decrypted

In this edition, we dive into the growing importance of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and hybrid encryption as a key approach to protect sensitive data from the future threats of quantum computing.

We’re also proud to announce that Cosmian covercrypt has received ETSI standardization, a major milestone in safeguarding data in a world where security is more critical than ever.

📢 You’ll also find a curated selection of recent articles on PQC, along with a comparative analysis of hybrid vs. non-hybrid strategies in Europe and the US.

🛡️ Why Act Now? The Global Push Toward Post-Quantum Cryptography

The rise of quantum computing fundamentally challenges the security of current encryption systems. In response, global cybersecurity authorities are mobilizing. The US, UK, and Europe all acknowledge the urgent need to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography.

  • United States: A Clear Roadmap from NIST

The US leads the race. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) launched its post-quantum algorithm selection process back in 2016. Here are the key dates:

➡️ 2016: Launch of the post-quantum algorithm selection process

➡️ 2022: Announcement of the first 4 selected algorithms (Kyber, Dilithium, etc.)

➡️ 2024: Official release of the first post-quantum standards

➡️ 2025: Recommended start of deployment in critical infrastructure

➡️ 2027+: Goal of widespread adoption across sensitive sectors

📌 NIST recommends organizations start planning now using a crypto-agile approach.

  • United Kingdom: Practical Guidance from the NCSC

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is also encouraging organizations to prepare. In a recent publication, the NCSC offers concrete guidance and suggested migration timelines, emphasizing the need for agility and strategic anticipation.

  • Europe: A Strong Call to Action—But No Calendar (Yet)

In a joint statement, France’s ANSSI and Germany’s BSI urge immediate action toward PQC transition. However, unlike the US and UK, no specific timeline has been announced yet. While the strategic intent is clear, implementation deadlines are still pending.

🔍 Explaining the Basics: Hybrid vs. Non-Hybrid Approaches

Europe, supported by ANSSI and ETSI, champions hybrid encryption, which combines classical and post-quantum algorithms. In contrast, the US—via NIST—favors a direct switch to purely post-quantum algorithms.

💡 Key takeaways

Double-layer protection: If one algorithm fails, the other ensures security

Flexible migration: Organizations can transition progressively

Two strategic paths: Europe opts for hybrid pragmatism, the US for full replacement

👉 Choosing hybrid doesn’t exclude the non-hybrid path later—but the reverse isn’t true.

Indeed, the NIST has chosen a non-hybrid path—favoring post-quantum-only algorithms (PQC), such as Kyber or Dilithium, without combining them with legacy algorithms.

➡️ Goal: Replace existing systems with rigorously vetted, standalone PQC standards

Benefits: Simpler long-term architecture, optimized performance

Risks: If the selected PQC algorithm is broken, there’s no fallback layer.
