Are all electrical installations performed with the same level of quality?

Are all electrical installations performed with the same level of quality?

At Hills Electrical Group, we understand that top-quality electrical installation is essential for you. But how can you be sure you’re receiving the optimal service?

Electrical installations must comply with BS 7671:2018, the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations. You may think that this guarantees high quality installation, however, the focus of BS 7671:2018 is safety, rather than standards. Essentially, you could run the risk of installations which follow the regulations but be of inadequate quality.

It doesn’t stop there, IET Wiring Regulations do not outline any specific qualifications required for electricians, therefore electricians are not of a standardised base level of quality. Thankfully, it is a requirement of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 that all persons carrying out electrical work must be competent to do so.

But... what does competent mean and who decides if an electrical installer is competent?

Perhaps the Wiring Regulations have addressed this issue, as the term 'skilled person' is used throughout BS 7671:2018. While it differs from the term 'competent,' the IET states that they mean the same thing; the individual performing the electrical work must possess sufficient education, training, and practical skills.

Hills Electrical Group embraces competency, going above and beyond to provide excellent installation services. We have installed electrical control systems in distribution centres, factories, manufacturing and processing plants in the automotive, industrial, recycling, food & beverage, pharmaceutical and eCommerce sectors.

Instead of racing to the bottom and going down the low-cost route, we actively decided to make our installations as high quality as possible and earned our mantra of right first time, on time, every time

Wired for Efficiency: Streamlining Electrical Installations for Seamless Success

How do we improve quality and progress timeliness of our installations? Here are some of the most important ideas to ensure that your business is wired for success:

People Ideas

We only hire qualified, experienced electricians and improvers, whilst also introducing new generations of apprentices, with the right ‘can-do’ attitude, to top quality electrical installation.

  • Induct new hires into our working practices.

  • Offer training as needed.

  • Explain the role of our supervisors and our approach to snagging.

  • Provide installation handbooks and the wherewithal to do the work.

  • Conduct daily huddles and explain our project closure process.

Process Ideas

We document and test our installation process thoroughly, ensuring a cycle of continuous improvement to make the next project even better than the last:

  1. Design Phase: Develop a project plan and specify components, plan layout, create schematics, and prepare bill of materials. Discuss cost-effective, time-efficient, and quality-enhancing solutions with customers.
  2. Procurement: Obtain all necessary components listed in the finalized bill of materials for installation.
  3.  Mobilisation: Compile installation site pack, conduct site and project induction meetings, and create the staging area.
  4. Implementation: Commence installation work, install containment, control panels, cabinets and other equipment according to the design layout. Supervise cable schedules, ensure team readiness, lead daily huddles, provide training, and produce weekly reports for stakeholders.
  5. Wiring: Connect components using specified cable schedules and wiring techniques, following current electrical standards to ensure safety and reliability. Label cables for easy identification and maintenance. Conduct daily inspections by electricians, with additional checks by supervisors. We complete the job at hand before moving to another area, as it is in the best interest for you, the customer.
  6. Testing and Commissioning: Conduct rigorous testing to verify system functionality, including dead testing, live testing, functional checks, and safety inspections.
  7. Handover: Compile comprehensive handover pack with wired diagrams, schematics, component lists, installation modifications, and test results for future maintenance and troubleshooting.

Following this process allows us to deliver your project right first time, on time, every time. If you’re hunting for the right electrical engineers to spark your business operations, contact Hills Electrical Group today, and learn how we can wire your business for success!
