Age of Cloud Computing

While most of you would know about the basic difference between public and private cloud, did you know there are two types of private cloud? Hosted and on-premise. Broadly, various cloud offerings can be divided into the following sub-types.

Public vs Private

Here is a brief comparison between Private Cloud and Public Cloud:

Most of the notable Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) offer both Private and Public Cloud. In case of public cloud, the servers processing your data would be shared with other public cloud clients of the CSPs based on server load balancing. Which is partly why public cloud rates are usually below private cloud.

Hosted vs On-Premise

On-premise private cloud: On-premise infrastructure (private datacenter) can be used to run private cloud, in which compute resources are virtualized in the same way as public cloud.

Hosted private cloud: Cloud that leverages servers owned by CSPs and offered over internet or private internal network e.g. Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.

Let's see how On-Premise private cloud compares to Hosted private cloud-

Clearly Public and Private cloud options are better than on-premise private cloud.

However, large companies with their own datacenters don't immediately shut their on-premise infrastructure in favor of cloud. They usually go for a more Hybrid solution initially with plans to migrate completely to Public/Private cloud depending on their experience.
