5 Tips to Break Into Cybersecurity!

There are many reasons why someone may want to transition into a cybersecurity role. Perhaps they have worked in IT for many years and are looking for a new challenge. Maybe they have just graduated from college with a degree in computer science and are looking to start their career in a challenging and demanding field. While the reason varies per person, transitioning into a cybersecurity role can be daunting. Here are some tips to help you make the transition successfully:  

1. Network, network, network! Attend cyber security conferences, meetups, and other networking events to meet people in the industry and learn about different job opportunities. LinkedIn is also an excellent resource for connecting with cybersecurity professionals and finding job postings.

2. Stay up to date on the latest trends. Cybersecurity is constantly evolving, so it’s essential to stay current on the latest threats, trends, and technologies. Reading industry news and blog posts, following influencers on Twitter, and subscribing to newsletters are great ways to stay informed.  

3. Invest in your education. Many employers value continuing education and professional development courses. Enrolling in an online cybersecurity program or taking individual courses can help you stand out from other candidates and show employers that you’re serious about your career in cybersecurity.  

4. Get hands-on! There are many online free resources available, which can be overwhelming. The best place to start is to focus on the fundamentals. This will help you figure out which specialty within cybersecurity you are most interested in. Once that is set, look for free resources within that specialty area and start the grind of learning through doing.

5. Find a mentor. A mentor can provide guidance, advice, and support as you transition into a cybersecurity role. They can help you navigate the job market, prepare for interviews, and connect you with other professionals in the industry. If you don’t have a mentor, consider joining a professional organization like ISSA or (ISC)2, which offers programs and resources for mentorship.
