5 Things Not to Do in an Interview
The interview might be the scariest word in the dictionary of jobseekers. It doesn't matter if you have just moved out of college or have ten years of experience. If you are going for an interview, it's quite natural to be nervous and commit easily avoidable mistakes. Here are the five things that you must not do in an Interview. Irrespective of the fact that interviews are telephonic or in-person.
Arrive Late
Punctuality is the most important quality, especially while appearing for an interview. Make sure, under no circumstances; you reach late at the venue. Being late can be disastrous for your interview performance. It puts you on backfoot right from the beginning, and you end up justifying yourself. Interviewers can make negative perceptions very quickly. Someone rightly said, "The first impression is the last impression."
Prepare Too Much
Everyone agrees that practice makes a man perfect. However, too much of anything is harmful. If you go over the possible questions and their answers in your head repeatedly, after a specific time, it makes you less flexible and open to improvising. Remember, the interviewer is not looking for a machine, but a human who has a mind. Preparation should make you feel confident if it starts messing up with your mind. Stop right there.
Say "Yes" to Everything.
Interviewers are experts who can easily differentiate between a genuine yes and a fake one. Interviewers ask situational questions to understand your thought process and problem-solving approach. If you have not faced a specific situation, there is no need to say that yes, you have. While it's only human to say yes and framing your answer, it can be a huge error. You can admit that you have not come across such a scenario; explain to them if it happens what steps you would take. Taking this approach will add more credibility to your personality.
Be Afraid to Ask for Extra Time.
While gauging the competency of the candidates, Interviewers notice the smallest of details. You must have heard that the body postures and verbal gestures tell a lot about the personality. It is perfectly okay to get stuck while answering something tricky. However, don't shy away from asking for a couple of minutes to think. Think it through and then respond. This behavior will tell a lot about your confidence. Everyone loves a person who has self-confidence.
Oversell yourself
The most common mistake people make during interviews is to keep boasting about your past achievements. Interviewers are professionals, and they know that you are not a superhero. Try being human and be frank in admitting if you made any blunder; however, don't forget what you learned and how you improvised to turn around the situation. Honesty is still an excellent virtue to have.
