The Third Platform: Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC)

The Third Platform: Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC)

Mobile Cloud Computing (#MCC) is a technique or model in which mobile applications are built, powered and hosted using cloud computing technology. A mobile cloud approach enables developers to build applications designed specifically for mobile users without being bound by the mobile operating system and the computing or memory capacity of the smartphone. Mobile cloud computing centered are generally accessed via a mobile browser from a remote webserver, typically without the need for installing a client application on the recipient phone.

Mobile Cloud Computing is differentiated from #MobileComputing in general because the devices run cloud-based Web apps rather than native apps. Users subscribe to cloud services and access remotely stored applications and their associated data over the Internet.

Typically, mobile devices run a mix of Web-based and native apps. However, the trend is increasingly toward the mobile cloud.

What is Mobile Cloud Computing?

Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is a new platform combining the mobile devices and cloud computing to create a new infrastructure, whereby cloud performs the heavy lifting of computing-intensive tasks and storing massive amounts of data. In this new architecture, data processing and data storage happen outside of mobile devices.

The driving force behind platform is the fact that mobile devices are constrained by:

  • Processing Power
  • Battery Life
  • Storage

Adding the power of the “Cloud “to Mobile applications leverages this IT architecture to generate the following advantages:

  • Extended battery life
  • Improvement in data storage capacity and processing power
  • Improved synchronization of data due to “store in one place, access from anywhere” policy
  • Improved reliability and scalability
  • Ease of integration
  • Provided security for Data

Factors Fostering The Growing Adoption of Mobile Cloud Computing:

  • Trends and demands: Enterprise users require always-on access to business applications and collaborative services so that they can increase their productivity from anywhere, even when they are on the commute.
  • Improved and increased broadband coverage: 4G along with WiFi, femto-cells, fixed wireless and so on are providing better connectivity for mobile devices.
  • Enabling technologies: HTML5, CSS3, hypervisor for mobile devices, cloudlets and Web 4.0 will drive adoption of mobile cloud computing.
  • The Power of the Cloud “Scale”: Cloud-based mobile apps can scale far beyond the capabilities of any smartphone. Instead of being limited to the data storage and processing power contained in a mobile device, cloud apps have all the power of a server-based computing infrastructure accessible through an app's mobile interface.

The Future is The Convergence of Mobile and Cloud to Become Mobile Cloud

The convergence of mobile and cloud into a single, cohesive, symbiotic platform has been dubbed by IDC as the “Third Platform”. The mobile cloud will allow for better access to and synchronization of data, improved scalability and reliability, and an ability to collaborate and access business applications from virtually anywhere and at any time.

The mobile and cloud trends still have unique aspects of their own and will continue to evolve separately, but mobile cloud will be a force that changes how, when, and where we get things done with our mobile devices.

I suggest you include thin and zero-client computing (Samsung has played with this for several years)...which I believe might be a bit more accurate. What will be interesting to watch is the rise of apps and BYOD as a virtual machine, which has always made more sense to me.
