We defined a Context object, yet we couldn’t render it directly—we had to access the .Provider property every single time. ⚛️ React 19 removes this requirement. ❌ The Old Way: UserContext.Provider It often felt like an implementation detail leaking into JSX. Over-engineering a React component is one of the easiest ways to slow down a team without anyone noticing. I've seen it happen on our main platform, a component gets useState, useEffect, a context provider, and three custom hooks just to fetch and display data that never changes on the client. In Next.js, that's often just a server component with a database call. No hydration, no client bundle cost, no re-render logic to debug at 4pm on a Friday. The real cost isn't the extra code. It's the next engineer who inherits it, assumes the complexity is intentional, and builds more complexity on top of it. My rough rule now: if the component doesn't respond to user interaction or browser APIs, it probably shouldn't be a client component at all. Today I explored one of the most important concepts in Next.js — Routing. Coming from React, I was used to handling routes manually using libraries like React Router. But Next.js makes this much simpler and more structured. 💡 Key learnings: In Next.js, folder structure defines routes page.js represents a route automatically Creating nested folders creates nested routes Dynamic routing using [id] makes it easy to handle dynamic pages Navigation is handled using the built-in <Link /> component 📂 Example: /app/about/page.js → /about /app/users/[id]/page.js → /users/1 This approach feels more intuitive and reduces boilerplate code compared to traditional routing. Most React developers are still thinking in a client-first way — and that’s becoming a problem. Server-first React is quietly changing how we build applications. The traditional approach: - Fetch in useEffect - Move data through APIs (JSON) - Render on the client This is no longer the default in modern React + Next.js. What’s changing: - Server Components handle data and rendering - Client Components are used only for interactivity - UI can be streamed directly from the server - Hydration is selective, not global Impact: - Less JavaScript sent to the browser - Reduced reliance on client-side state - Better performance by default - Simpler data flow (often without an extra API layer) A useful mental model: Server = data + structure Client = interaction This isn’t just a feature update - it’s a shift in architecture. 8.2 seconds to 1.1 seconds. Same app. Same data. Same backend. No infrastructure changes. No new framework. Just better engineering decisions. Here is exactly what we did. Code splitting with React.lazy and Suspense. We stopped shipping every route on the first load. You only get what you need, when you need it. List virtualization. We were rendering 500 DOM nodes when 10 were visible. react-window fixed that in an afternoon. Memoization audit. We profiled with React DevTools first, then applied useMemo, useCallback, and React.memo where they actually helped. Not everywhere. State co-location. Context was triggering global re-renders we did not even know about. Moving state closer to where it was used cut unnecessary renders by 60 percent. Library replacement. We swapped Moment.js for the Intl API and cut lodash for native array methods. 80KB gone overnight. Performance is not a backlog item. It is respect for your users time.
