The first instinct for a lot of software engineers unhappy with their current team or the work they're doing is to leave the company and find something new now. That makes sense on paper, but in practice it's not the easiest thing to do right now. The market is tough. First, you have to find a way to stand out in the sea of hundreds of applications to get the recruiters attention, and then you still have the whole technical interview grind ahead of you. It's a lot of hard work that requires persistence. Most people hit a wall, get discouraged, and end up staying in their current position. That's how you find yourself on the same team for seven. 8 or even 9 years doing work that's not fulfilling and moving your career forward. So here's a more pragmatic alternative. How about you do a lateral move within your company? Think about it. You're already inside the organization so you have context. You know which teams are shipping interesting work and which ones are not. That's a massive advantage that most external candidates don't have. Most companies also have internal job boards that list the hiring manager and the recruiter for each role along with the job description. That means you can sort of bypass the code application process and go straight to reaching out to the hiring manager. And scheduling an informational with them, that's an advantage you have by being internal, and it will do more for your chances than simply applying. The internal interviewing process is usually less intense than interviewing externally. There are usually fewer rounds and a lot of managers actually prefer internal candidates because you already know the systems, the tools, the way the company operates. You're not starting from zero. Now the trade off is, depending on the company policy, your salary may not increase with a lateral move. But if you land on the team, don't work you're genuinely excited about, work that challenges you and opens doors to the next level. That's still a win if you ask me. Do not become a monkey coder, I repeat do not become a monkey coder. Think before you implement something in your feature. Think why a certain thing needs to be implemented in a certain way. Why a certain technology or certain library needs to be used at certain place. If someone is saying to use this or that, you need to use your own brain and question it why....else you are gonna suffer sooner or later.
