I like to introduce TIA Scripting Python. It is a Python module which allows you to remotely control TIA Portal using small Python scripts. After downloading the installation file, we can use the package installer for Python, short pip, to install TIA Scripting Python on the system. Make sure to use the fitting module to the Python version on your system. Next we create a new Python script in Visual Studio Code. In this script we import Siemens TIA Scripting and assign it an alias. After that we open a project. TIA Scripting provides a convenient method called open_attach_project() therefore. If TIA Portal is not already running, this method will automatically start an instance of TIA Portal and open the specified project with the correct version, even if you have multiple TIA Portal versions installed. In addition to the project path, we can also specify the project mode, which allows us to start TIA Portal with its user interface if needed. Once the project is opened, it is assigned to the variable project. From here we can for example iterate over all PLCs by calling project with get_plcs(). In the next step we check if the current PLC object contains a specific name. If it does, we compile the hardware and software of that device. Next, we iterate over all HMIs and print their names. Finally we save the script and run it. In the background you'll see two things. The output from TIA Scripting Python which shows what the script is currently doing. And the TIA Portal instance where the project is opened and the compilation process is executed. TIA Scripting Python offers many more functions to interact with the project, for example working with blocks, screens and performing tests. With just a few lines of code you can access a wide range of functionality. Besides the simple handling due to intellisense, it improves code maintainability due to much smaller scripts compared to C# applications. With a single script you can work across different TIA Portal versions and you also have the comfort functions such as open_attach_project() which handles several actions with just one command. In summary, TIA Scripting Python gives you a powerful and flexible way to automate TIA Portal tasks, saving time and reducing complexity in your engineer workflow.
