What makes a senior engineer? It’s not just years of experience. It’s how you think 🧠 – You focus on trade-offs, not just solutions – You optimize for simplicity, not complexity – You think about failure, not just happy paths – You care about system behavior, not just code – You make things predictable for others The biggest difference: A mid-level engineer writes code that works A senior engineer builds systems that keep working 🚀 What do you think defines a senior engineer? #backend #backenddeveloper #softwareengineering #programming #developer #coding #developers #tech #devlife #webdevelopment #nodejs #nestjs #javascript #typescript #api #restapi #microservices #systemdesign #architecture #scalability #reliability #cloud #aws #docker #kubernetes #techcareers #itcareer #seniorengineer #growthmindset #computerscience

I think the real shift happens when you stop asking "how do I implement this" and start asking "should we even build this and what will break when it fails." A senior engineer knows that deleting code is often more valuable than writing it. They also understand that being predictable and boring is a feature - not a flaw - because the next person needs to debug it at 2 AM. For me, the biggest milestone was realizing that my job isn't to be the smartest person in the room - it's to make everyone else more effective. That's when you stop chasing clever solutions and start chasing reliability and team velocity.

I like the idea, but I think "senior engineer" depends heavily on context. In some teams, seniors are just execution-heavy.

Well put. I’d add that senior engineers also reduce complexity for others, not just solve problems, but make the system easier to work with over time.

Honestly this feels like buzzword engineering. In real life, senior just means you’ve seen more bugs and edge cases.

seeing the problem before the code is written. that's the real senior move

I kinda agree, but sometimes "senior thinking" just slows things down. Not every task needs a system design essay 😄
