And that changes how you should think about writing JS. Here’s what’s happening under the hood: 1️⃣ Parsing & AST Generation Your code is converted into an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST). I spent HOURS debugging… and the bug was just ONE line. 😅 Everything looked fine. No syntax errors. No warnings. But the output? Completely wrong. console.log([] == false); // true console.log([] === false); // false Wait… what? 🤯 How can the same values give different results? Then it hit me — one of JavaScript’s most confusing concepts: 👉 Type Coercion Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes: "[] == false" ➡ JavaScript converts both values ➡ becomes "0 == 0" ➡ ✅ true "[] === false" ➡ Strict comparison (no conversion) ➡ ❌ false Same values. Different rules. Completely different results. ⚠️ This is where many bugs are born — not because we don’t know JavaScript… but because JavaScript behaves unexpectedly. 💡 Lesson (relearned the hard way): Always prefer "===" over "==" ✔ "===" → checks value + type ❌ "==" → tries to be “smart” (and gets risky) Sometimes debugging isn’t about writing more code… it’s about understanding how the language actually works. JavaScript Secret Most Developers Miss Most developers use || for default values… But very few truly understand the Nullish Coalescing operator (??) The problem with ||: let count = 0; let result = count || 10; console.log(result); // 10 ❌ Why? Because || treats all falsy values as false: 0, "", false, NaN, null, undefined Now see the correct way using ??: let count = 0; let result = count ?? 10; console.log(result); // 0 ✅ ?? only replaces the value when it's: null undefined More examples: "" ?? "default" // "" false ?? true // false NaN ?? 100 // NaN undefined ?? "hello" // "hello" Simple rule: || → checks falsy values ?? → checks null or undefined only JavaScript isn’t weird… it’s precise. If JavaScript is single-threaded and the call stack never pauses — how does '𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐭' even work? Turns out, it doesn't live in JavaScript at all. 𝐖𝐞𝐛 𝐀𝐏𝐈𝐬 — 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐮𝐭, 𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐜𝐡( ), 𝐃𝐎𝐌 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 — are gifts from the browser, not the language. The browser quietly hands them off, runs them in the background, then places the result into a 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐮𝐞 . And here's the elegant part: The 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐩 sits there, watching. The moment the call stack is empty, it picks up the waiting callback functions and pushes it in. That's it. No magic. Just a disciplined handoff between three moving parts.
