Hey LinkedIn Family 👋 A small JavaScript habit that improved the way I write code: 🚀 Use optional chaining (?.) and nullish coalescing (??) properly. Earlier, I used to write: const city = user && user.address && user.address.city ? user.address.city : "Unknown"; Now I write: const city = user?.address?.city ?? "Unknown"; Why this is better 👇 ✅ Cleaner code ✅ Easier to read ✅ Safer when data is missing ✅ Great for API responses This becomes very useful in React / React Native apps where nested data is common. Example: const profileImage = response?.data?.user?.avatar ?? defaultImage; Biggest Lesson: Good JavaScript is often about writing simpler code, not more code. Small improvements in syntax can make a big difference in maintainability. Node.js Core Concepts 🚀 Mastering the fundamentals is what separates good backend developers from great ones. Here are the 7 Node.js core concepts every developer should know: 1️⃣ Event Loop The heart of Node.js. One thread. Thousands of concurrent operations. Understanding phases (Timers → I/O → Poll → Check → Close) is non-negotiable. 2️⃣ Non-Blocking I/O Stop blocking your thread with readFileSync. Async callbacks, promises, and streams keep your app responsive under load. 3️⃣ Callbacks → Promises → Async/Await We've come a long way from "Callback Hell". Async/Await gives you clean, readable, maintainable code. Use it. 4️⃣ Streams Don't load 2GB files into memory. Process data in chunks with Readable, Writable, Duplex, and Transform streams. Your RAM will thank you. 5️⃣ Module System CommonJS vs ES Modules — know the difference. ES Modules are the future. Start thinking in import/export. 6️⃣ Error Handling Unhandled errors crash apps. Use try/catch, handle rejected promises, and always set up process.on('uncaughtException') as your last line of defense. 7️⃣ Scalability — Cluster & Worker Threads I/O-heavy? → Cluster mode. CPU-heavy? → Worker Threads. Multi-core systems exist for a reason — use them. 💡 The Big Picture: Node.js isn't just JavaScript on the server. I've been writing JavaScript for years. And for years, I thought TypeScript was just extra work. I was wrong. Completely wrong. After switching to TypeScript full-time, my debugging time dropped by almost 40%. My code reviews became faster. Onboarding new devs became easier. And I stopped getting 3am calls about production bugs. Here's everything I wish someone had taught me before making the switch What is TypeScript, really? TypeScript is JavaScript - but with a superpower: a type system. It's a superset of JavaScript, which means every valid JS file is already valid TypeScript. You don't relearn the language. You extend it. TypeScript adds: - Static types (string, number, boolean, custom types) - Interfaces and type aliases - Enums - Generics - Type inference (TS is smart enough to guess types) - Compile-time error checking The TypeScript compiler (tsc) transpiles your .ts files back into plain JavaScript - so browsers and Node.js run it exactly the same. You write safer code. The machine handles the rest. Why JavaScript alone isn't enough anymore in Modern Web Apps JavaScript was built in 10 days in 1995. It was designed for tiny scripts - not 100,000-line enterprise apps, not distributed teams of 50 engineers, not systems that handle millions of users. In JS, this is perfectly valid code: function add(a, b) { return a + b; } add("5", 10); // Returns "510", not 15 No error. No warning. Just wrong behavior at runtime. In TypeScript: function add(a: number, b: number): number { return a + b; } add("5", 10); // ERROR at compile time - caught before it ships This is the core value of TypeScript: it moves bugs from runtime (when users feel it) to compile time (when only you see it).
