I reduced engineering iteration cycles from hours to minutes using AI Over the past year, I started changing how I approach development. Instead of treating AI as just a helper, I began using it as part of the core workflow. That meant integrating it directly into debugging, prototyping, and implementation. "Member of technical staff" or "software engineer" can mean very different things depending on who's hiring. 1/ Full-stack: TypeScript, Vercel, cloud, Python/Go, APIs and SDKs. Startups often call this “product engineering.” 2/ AI engineering: AI harness, evals, fine tuning, MCPs, tool calls, skills. Companies previously called this “backend engineering.” 3/ Inference engineering: hosting models, pre-training environments, model deployments with no single point of failure. Cerebras, Baseten, Fireworks, Hugging Face. Companies like Meta also call this “platform engineering” or “ML infra.” 4/ Research Engineer: model training of open source LLMs, RL environments, classical ML. Recommendation engines in 2016 to computer use agents in 2026. companies also call this “ML engineer.” I talk to hiring teams every day and most job postings don't tell you which of these four they actually need. Backend engineers building AI infrastructure are one of the hardest profiles to close at the moment Distributed systems, multi-agent orchestration, real time data. That's the new shortlist. I'm seeing founders chase engineers who have actually shipped something at scale. Not just code, but systems with users. Competitive programming comes up again and again. It's a marker for technical depth, but also for how people approach unsolved problems. Java, Python, Go, C++ are table stakes. What gets attention is experience with agentic design or AI driven systems. Hiring managers want engineers who can see the whole stack, even if the job says backend. The best candidates are not just coding. They're designing, owning, and sometimes deploying end to end. This is where the bar is now. If you're not building a pipeline that recognises this, you're not going to close. Outcomes, not just tasks.

Before 2020, we were hiring engineers. People who could write clean code, debug fast, and know their data structures cold & That was the job main requirement. Fast forward to today... AI writes the first draft of most code. It refactors. It debugs. It suggests architecture. So we have been asking ourselves… If AI can do what I used to hire for… What exactly am I hiring now? Took me a while to figure it out. But the answer is: decision-makers who happen to know code. Here's what changed in how I hire: ❌ Before — can you write this function? ✅ Now — can you tell me if we even NEED this function? ❌ Before — how fast can you ship? ✅ Now — can you push back when the deadline doesn't make sense? ❌ Before — do you know this tech stack? ✅ Now — can you choose the RIGHT stack for this problem? The best engineers I work with today don't just execute. They question. They challenge. They think 3 steps ahead. AI is a powerful tool. But it still needs someone in the room who understands the problem deeply enough to know when the AI is wrong. And trust me — it gets it wrong and got NUTS 😂 The developers who will thrive are not the ones who fight AI. And not the ones who blindly trust it either. It's the ones who know how to direct it. Think of it like this: AI is the best junior dev you've ever had. Fast. Tireless. No ego. But it still needs a senior to lead. Your job didn't disappear -> IT JUST LEVELED UP! Another engineer laughed at my LinkedIn title: “Full Stack AI Engineer.” Said it sounded goofy and not very professional. Keep in mind this was a C++ developer slash mathematician. I guess he had an ego since I've never me the guy. At the time, I didn’t argue. I just kept working. But lately, I’ve been noticing something… More and more companies are hiring for exactly that. Not just ML engineers. Not just backend devs. They want people who can actually build and ship AI systems end-to-end. And when you look at these roles, they’re asking for: Distributed systems API design MLOps Security Product thinking Basically… real-world engineering. Here’s the part people don’t like to admit: If you can’t design systems, handle data + retrieval, think about reliability, and understand the product side… you’re not really building AI products yet. You’re experimenting. A “Full Stack AI Engineer” (or whatever you want to call it) needs to think across: • System design • Tools & integrations • Retrieval • Reliability • Security & safety • Evaluation • Product TLDR; You don’t have to like the title. But the skillset behind it? That’s where things are going.

Currently working as an AI Specialist on my project, I’ve seen firsthand that the role goes far beyond just building models. In real-world scenarios, delivering AI use cases is an end-to-end engineering effort that brings together: - Data pipelines and warehousing (including distributed processing with Spark) - APIs and microservices for model integration and orchestration - Feature engineering and scalable data workflows - UI/UX layers to translate AI outputs into usable experiences - MLOps practices for deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement Increasingly, this also involves working with GenAI patterns such as LLM integration, vector databases, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to build intelligent, context-aware applications. It’s not just about algorithms—it’s about designing and operationalizing scalable, reliable AI systems that deliver real business value. This article makes perfect sense.
