Concurrency vs Parallelism in Java: Key Differences Explained Introduction to Java Java is now one of the most widely utilised and widespread languages of the world; it is high-level, object-oriented, and platform-independent. Java, which was developed by Sun Microsystems in 1995, was built with the principle of "write once, run anywhere", which implies that the code written in the Java language can run on any device that has the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) installed, regardless of any specific hardware or operating system. What Is Concurrency? Concurrency means managing several tasks at a given time; this does not mean running them at a single point in time, but managing them so they effectively make progress together. This is the way a program is made to respond while several things are done at once. "A woman standing behind the bar, serving multiple tables of a restaurant. She can't serve every customer at the same time, but she can try to switch between tables to satisfy the different customers. That's concurrency in action." In the case of Java, concurrency is most commonly implemented via threads that are lightweight units of execution, allowing different parts of the program to execute, but appear to execute simultaneously. What Is Parallelism? Parallelism is performing multiple things at the same time, using different processors or CPU cores for that purpose. The idea is not only to make the system responsive but also to speed it up–doing more in less time. For example, in an analogy of a restaurant, parallelism would be having different waiters serving different tables at the same time. In this way, each table would get simultaneous attention, making the service faster overall. It is in Java that you perform parallelism by executing tasks that can be split into independent units of work and can thus run across multiple CPU cores for true simultaneous execution. Can You Use Both Together? Indeed, many systems in the real world do have those properties. A Java application can be simultaneous and parallel at the same time; for example, a concurrent one would open multiple threads to handle various tasks: read, process, and save. Then, taking one of these threads, a parallel processing framework can be used to divide the workload among cores. When to Use Concurrency vs Parallelism Here's a simple rule: use concurrency when you want your application to handle many simultaneous tasks (especially I/O-bound tasks), even if they are not all active at any one point in time. Use parallelism when you want to speed up a single intensive task by dissecting it into parts that can be run across multiple cores. Some applications require one or the other. Most applications will need a combination of both. Knowing when and how to apply them is what separates a good Java developer from a great one.

🚀🎊Day 71 of 90 – Java Backend Development ✨🎆 In Java, a Stream is not a data structure; it’s a powerful way to process collections of objects in a functional style. Introduced in Java 8, the Stream API allows you to chain together high-level operations to perform complex data processing with very little code. Think of a stream like a conveyor belt in a factory. Data flows from a source, passes through various stations (filters, mappers), and eventually ends up as a finished product. 👉 1. How a Stream works A stream pipeline generally consists of three main parts: i) A Source: This provides the data. Usually, this is a Collection (like a List or Set), an array, or an I/O channel. ii) Intermediate Operations: These transform the stream into another stream (e.g., filter, map, sorted). They are lazy, meaning they don't execute until a terminal operation is called. iii) A Terminal Operation: This produces a result or a side effect (e.g., collect, forEach, reduce, count). Once this is called, the stream is "consumed" and cannot be used again. 👉2. Key characteristics: i)Declarative: You describe what you want to achieve (e.g., "filter even numbers") rather than how to do it (e.g., writing a for loop with an if statement). ii) Pipelining: Most stream operations return a new stream, allowing operations to be chained. iii) Internal Iteration: Unlike a for-each loop where you control the iteration (external), the Stream API handles the iteration for you behind the scenes. iv) Non-Storage: A stream does not store data; it simply moves data from a source through a pipeline of computational steps. 👉3. Code example: Suppose you have a list of names and you want to find names starting with "A," convert them to uppercase, and put them in a new list. The Stream Way (Functional): List<String> result = names.stream() .filter(n -> n.startsWith("A")) // Intermediate .map(String::toUpperCase) // Intermediate .collect(Collectors.toList()); // Terminal 👉4. Why use them? Streams make your code more readable and maintainable. They also make it incredibly easy to perform parallel processing. 💡Fail-Fast vs Fail-Safe Iterators in Java 💥 ConcurrentModificationException (CME) — why it exists and what really happens when you bypass it. 🔴 The Silent Bug Imagine Thread-1 is iterating over an ArrayList, while Thread-2 removes an element at the same time. Internally, the array shifts elements to fill the gap, but the iterator of Thread-1 is still moving based on the old structure. The result is subtle but dangerous — elements may get skipped or processed incorrectly. There's no crash, no warning, no logs. Just silently corrupted data. This is the worst kind of bug because you don't even know it exists. ✅ Fail-Fast Iterator (ArrayList) Java solves this problem using ConcurrentModificationException. Inside ArrayList, a variable called "modCount" tracks structural changes. When an iterator is created, it stores this value as "expectedModCount". Every time "next()" is called, it checks whether both values still match. If they don't, ConcurrentModificationException is thrown immediately. It makes the problem visible immediately. 🧠 Important Insight This is not just a multi-threading issue. Even in single-threaded code, modifying a list inside a for-each loop will trigger CME. The correct approach is to use the iterator's own "remove()" method, which keeps everything in sync. 🤔 When You NEED Modification During Iteration In real-world systems, you often need both safe iteration and concurrent modification. That's where CopyOnWriteArrayList comes in. 🟢 CopyOnWriteArrayList (Fail-Safe / Snapshot Model) Instead of detecting problems, it avoids them entirely by changing how data is handled. When you call "iterator()", you get a snapshot of the current array. That iterator will continue to use that snapshot and will never be affected by future changes. So it never throws ConcurrentModificationException. 🔄 What Happens During Write? On every add, remove, or update: - A lock is acquired - The entire array is copied - Changes are applied to the new copy - Internal reference is switched Meanwhile, existing iterators continue reading the old version safely. ♻️ What About Memory? The old array remains in memory as long as it is being used by any iterator. Once no references remain, the garbage collector removes it. This is how iteration stays safe without any locking. ⚖️ Trade-Off CopyOnWriteArrayList gives safety and simplicity, but at a cost. Reads are extremely fast and non-blocking, but every write operation is expensive because it involves copying the entire array. It also increases memory usage temporarily. 📌 When to Use It works best in read-heavy systems like caching, configuration data, or event listeners, where modifications are rare but safe iteration is critical. Deadlock is one of the most important concurrency problems in Java. It happens when two or more threads are blocked forever, each waiting for a resource held by another thread. In simple words: *Thread A is waiting for Thread B *Thread B is waiting for Thread A *Neither can move *Application gets stuck forever This is called Deadlock. What is Deadlock in Java? A deadlock occurs when multiple threads hold locks that the others need, and none of them can proceed. Java deadlocks usually happen when working with: * synchronized * multiple shared resources * improper lock ordering This is a classic multithreading problem. Real-Life Analogy Imagine: * Person A has Key 1 and needs Key 2 * Person B has Key 2 and needs Key 1 Now both are waiting for each other forever. That is exactly how deadlock works in Java. 🚀 Atomicity in Java — The Concept That Breaks (or Saves) Your Multithreading Code If you’ve ever written this: count++; …and assumed it’s safe in multithreading ❌ 👉 That’s exactly where atomicity comes in. 🧠 What is Atomicity (Simple Definition) 👉 Atomicity means: an operation happens completely or not at all — no in-between state is visible. Think of it like a light switch 💡 * Either ON * Or OFF * Never half-on 🍕 Real-Life Example: UPI Payment When you send money using apps like Google Pay or PhonePe: 👉 Either: ✔️ Money is deducted AND received OR ✔️ Nothing happens ❌ You never want: * Money deducted but not received That guarantee = Atomicity ⚠️ Now in Java (Where Things Go Wrong) This looks simple: count++; But internally it’s NOT one step 👇 1️⃣ Read value of count 2️⃣ Add 1 3️⃣ Write back 👉 That’s 3 operations, not 1 💥 Problem in Multithreading Two threads run at same time: * Thread A reads → 5 * Thread B reads → 5 * Thread A writes → 6 * Thread B writes → 6 👉 Final value = 6 (❌ wrong, should be 7) This is called Lost Update Problem 👉 Because operation was NOT atomic 🧠 How to Make Operations Atomic?
