Most Kubernetes content is too obvious. Deployments. Services. Ingress. Repeat. The interesting stuff is the layer after that. I just wrote about 7 Kubernetes features that feel like cheats once you discover them: - Ephemeral containers - Startup probes - Topology spread constraints - TTL cleanup for finished Jobs - Indexed Jobs - Priority Classes - Pod Disruption Budgets These are not "Kubernetes basics." They are the features that make you stop and say: "Wait. Kubernetes can already do that?" My top 3 from the list: 1. Ephemeral containers for debugging distroless pods 2. Kubernetes didn’t make our system faster. It made our mistakes less dangerous. Before orchestration, a small configuration issue could mean: ->Downtime ->Manual restarts -> Panic debugging -> Emergency calls With Kubernetes, failures still happen. Containers crash. Nodes go down. Deployments misbehave. But the system doesn’t freeze. It reacts. It replaces. It reroutes. It retries. That shift changed how I build software. Now I don’t just ask: “Does this work?” I ask: “What happens when it breaks?” Because in distributed systems, things will break. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s controlled recovery. Troubleshooting Kubernetes: Why 'kubectl logs' isn't always the answer. 🚀 Most engineers jump straight to kubectl logs the moment a Pod fails. But as a K8s practitioner, I’ve learned that debugging is a tiered process. If you don't know where to look, you're just wasting time. Here is my professional workflow for diagnosing Pod failures: 🔍 Phase 1: The Infrastructure Level (The "Describe" Phase) Before a container even attempts to boot, Kubernetes must validate the configuration. If your Pod is stuck in CreateContainerConfigError or ImagePullBackOff, logs will not exist. ✅ Tool: kubectl describe pod [name] ✅ Expert Insight: Always scroll to the "Events" section. It’s the source of truth for mapping issues, missing Secrets, or resource constraints. I recently caught a "Missing Secret Key" error that would have been invisible to any other command. 📜 Phase 2: The Application Level (The "Logs" Phase) Once the status is Running but the app is misbehaving (or stuck in CrashLoopBackOff), the issue lies within the code or the runtime environment. ✅ Tool: kubectl logs [name] ✅ Expert Insight: Use -f for real-time streaming to catch intermittent connection drops or startup race conditions. 💡 The Bottom Line: Infrastructure issues require Describe. Application issues require Logs. Knowing the difference is what separates a Senior DevOps Engineer from a beginner. One thing I’ve noticed working with Kubernetes: Most problems aren’t caused by Kubernetes… They’re caused by inconsistent usage of it. Same cluster. Same tools. #Different teams → #different standards → #unpredictable outcomes. So instead of adding more documentation, we focused on enforcing consistency. What changed when I introduced structured policies: #No more missing resource limits #No more “temporary” insecure configs reaching production #Namespaces come with quotas and network policies by default #Every workload has traceable ownership (labels enforced) And the important part: #Developers didn’t have to remember any of this. The approach was simple but intentional: #Enforce what must not break (validate) #Auto-fix what’s commonly missed (mutate) #Auto-create what should always exist (generate) You don’t scale Kubernetes by adding more control. You scale it by removing decisions from humans and putting them into the platform.
