While building a recent Spring Boot application, I realized... The Hook: Stop defaulting to .parallelStream() to make your Java code "faster." 🛑 The Insight: It’s a common misconception that parallel streams always improve performance. Under the hood, parallelStream() uses the common ForkJoinPool. If you are executing CPU-intensive tasks on a massive dataset, it’s great. But if you are doing I/O operations (like database calls or network requests) inside that stream, you will exhaust the thread pool and bottleneck your entire application. The Pro Tip: Always benchmark. For I/O bound tasks, look into asynchronous programming (like CompletableFuture) or Java 21's Virtual Threads instead of parallel streams. #Java #PerformanceOptimization #SoftwareEngineering #CleanCode

Surprised to see Java 26 already out 👀🚀 Feels like just yesterday we were discussing Java 21/25, and now JDK 26 is here. For reference : https://jdk.java.net/26/ This one isn’t about hype features, it’s more of a “silent upgrade” release. Not an LTS ⚠️ → so most production systems won’t switch yet. But still, some really interesting updates 👇 HTTP/3 support in HttpClient → faster, modern network communication. Structured Concurrency (preview) → cleaner parallel programming model. Primitive Pattern Matching evolving further → Java getting more expressive. AOT caching improvements → faster startup, better for microservices. Goodbye Applets 💀 → legacy cleanup continues. Stronger security rules → “final” now actually means final. Overall vibe? Less noise, more solid engineering. Not something you rush to adopt, but definitely something you should be aware of. Java Memory Model defines: ✔ How threads interact through memory ✔ Visibility guarantees ✔ Ordering rules Without volatile: One thread may not see updates made by another thread. volatile ensures: ✔ Visibility ✔ No instruction reordering But: volatile ≠ thread safety for complex operations. The interesting timeout question is not whether a distributed system will hit deadlines. It will. The real question is what your code does next. Do you fail the whole response? Do you return partial data? Do you stop unfinished work cleanly, or let it keep running after the caller is already gone? That is what I wrote about in Part 2 of the structured concurrency series. In Java 21, `StructuredTaskScope` makes those choices much more explicit. You can model strict all-or-nothing timeouts, or return partial results when some sections are optional. The part I like is that cancellation and cleanup stop being scattered across the code. Double-checked locking in Java looks correct… but it’s broken without volatile. Why? Because of instruction reordering by the JVM. Object creation is NOT atomic: 1. Allocate memory 2. Assign reference 3. Initialize object Steps 2 and 3 can be reordered. So another thread might get a reference to an object that is not fully initialized ❌ This leads to subtle and hard-to-debug bugs. One method in my Java demo app was using 71% of CPU. The code looked perfectly fine. After my DevNexus talk, attendees kept asking about the specific anti-patterns. This post shows eight patterns that compile fine, pass code review, and silently kill performance. Before/after: 1,198ms → 239ms. 85K → 419K orders/sec. 19 GC pauses → 4. Part 1 of 3.
