At first, a few calls between JS and native modules don’t cause trouble. But as your app grows, that bridge becomes a major choke point. One case I faced was a screen that felt sluggish because hundreds of async calls were queued up crossing the bridge. The fix? Batch those calls and reduce round-trips. Also, watch out for heavy data passing. Serializing large objects repeatedly kills responsiveness. Instead, cache native data and pass lightweight references. Finally, audit your event listeners. Today I learned about WebSocket connections while building a chat app. From what I understood, WebSocket is a protocol that upgrades from the previous HTTP connection and keeps the connection open. Unlike traditional request-response, the connection remains persistent and bidirectional, which means both client and server can send data anytime. It supports full-duplex communication, and it is event-based data is sent only when an event occurs. One important thing I learned is that since the connection stays open, it must be properly closed when no longer needed. Otherwise, it can lead to issues like memory leaks because the server keeps storing active connections. Also features like online/offline status, typing indicators, last seen, etc. are basically just events/messages sent over WebSocket. We define a message format (like JSON) and handle it accordingly. In the video below, I tried implementing this in a simple chat app. The UI is very minimal and not properly styled the focus was only on understanding the working. One of the most painful bugs I faced didn’t crash the app. It appeared days after release. Everything looked fine: No errors. No warnings. No crashes. But in production… -Users started getting random logouts -Sessions were resetting unexpectedly -It was hard to reproduce Backend was fine. Tokens were valid. So the issue was inside the app. - Root cause: Async race condition in auth flow On app launch: - Token read - Refresh triggered - Auth state updated All happening at the same time. Sometimes the app checked auth before state was ready. Result: valid users were treated as logged out. Fix: • Centralized auth initialization • Added boot/loading gate • Fixed async order in token flow Result: - Stable sessions - No random logouts - Predictable auth flow The worst bugs are the ones that don’t crash — they silently break behavior over time. The truth is, users don’t care about messy code. But developers do. I once built a React Native app for a client. Messy code. No structure. Just “make it work.” And it worked.
