Nodemon or Doraemon? 😄 | Smart Shortcuts for Faster Node.js Development When developers start building a Node.js backend, many of us do everything manually. But knowing a few smart shortcuts can make development much faster and smoother. 🔹 Use nodemon Normally, when you run a Node server, you have to manually restart it every time you change the code. With nodemon, the server automatically restarts whenever a file change is detected, which keeps the development flow smooth. 🔹 Use Environment Variables Sensitive information like database URLs, API keys, or secret keys should never be hardcoded. Instead, store them in a .env file and manage them easily using the dotenv package. This keeps your project cleaner and more secure. 🔹 Use Express Generator or Boilerplates Instead of creating the folder structure from scratch, using a basic Express boilerplate can save a lot of time. It already provides routing and middleware setup so you can focus on the core logic. 🔹 Async Error Handling Wrapper Writing try/catch repeatedly in every async route can make code messy. A small helper wrapper function can keep routes clean and improve readability. 🔹 Use Mongoose Schemas for MongoDB If you’re working with MongoDB, Mongoose schemas allow you to define validation, default values, and data structure in one place. When frontend and backend applications communicate, they need a structured way to exchange data. One of the most widely used formats for this is JSON. JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation. It is a lightweight format used to store and transfer data between a client and a server. The reason JSON is so popular is because it is simple, readable, and language independent. A typical JSON structure looks like this: ``` { "name": "John", "email": "john@example.com", "role": "developer" } ``` In a full stack application: • The frontend sends data to the backend in JSON format. • The backend processes the request. • The server sends JSON responses back to the client. For example: A login request might send: email and password → server verifies → response returned in JSON. Exploring Node.js – Simplifying Core Concepts I’ve been currently exploring Node.js and tried to break down a few important concepts in a simple way: Modules (Think: Building Blocks) Modules are reusable pieces of code that help organize applications into smaller, manageable parts. Types of modules: 1. Common JS (require) const fs = require('fs'); console.log("Common JS module loaded"); 2. ES Modules (import) import fs from 'fs'; console.log("ES Module loaded"); Core Modules (Built-in Functionality) 3.Custom Modules Custom modules are your own JavaScript files that you create to organize and reuse code in a Node.js application Custom modules = your own reusable code files in Node.js Node.js provides several built-in modules, so there’s no need for external installation. Common examples: fs → file system operations http → creating servers path → handling file paths import fs from 'fs'; fs.writeFileSync("hello.txt", "Learning Node.js"); Global Objects (Always Available) These are accessible anywhere in a Node.js application without importing them. Examples: __dirname console process console.log(__dirname); Simple Way to Remember Modules = reusable code Core modules = built-in tools Global objects = available everywhere Currently focusing on strengthening fundamentals and building practical projects step by step. 🏍️(Day-23) Built a Full-Stack Authentication System with JSON Server! Just completed a mini project that implements a complete user authentication flow using vanilla JavaScript and JSON Server — no frameworks, just pure fundamentals. What it does: 🔐 Sign Up Flow — A dynamic registration form appears on demand. Users enter their credentials, which are validated and stored directly into a local JSON database via a POST request to JSON Server. ✅ Login Flow — On login, the app fetches all stored user records via a GET request, then maps through the data to match the entered username and password. If credentials match, the user is redirected to the main page. If not, an alert notifies them. Key concepts I practiced: ⚡ Dynamic DOM manipulation — creating and removing elements on the fly with createElement, innerHTML, and remove() ⚡ Async/Await with Fetch API — handling real HTTP requests (GET & POST) to a local REST API ⚡ JSON Server — simulating a real backend database with zero setup ⚡ Event-driven architecture — attaching and managing multiple event listeners dynamically ⚡ State management — using boolean flags to toggle UI states without any framework Tech Stack: HTML · CSS · Vanilla JavaScript · JSON Server · REST API · Fetch API This project taught me how real authentication systems think — store, fetch, compare. I promised — and I delivered. Here's usePromise: a custom React hook I built that I genuinely believe should be in every developer's project from day one. Let me explain why. The problem nobody talks about openly: Every React developer has written this exact block of code hundreds of times mentioned in the image 👇 It works. It's familiar. And it's been silently violating the DRY principle across every codebase you've ever touched. usePromise replaces all of that with a single hook that handles: ✅ Loading, data, and error state — managed via useReducer to prevent async race conditions ✅ Real request cancellation via AbortController (not just ignoring the response — actually aborting the request) ✅ Data transformation at the configuration level with dataMapper ✅ Lifecycle callbacks — onSuccess, onError, onComplete, and isRequestAbortionComplete ✅ executeOnMount support — fire on render without a single useEffect in your component ✅ Full reset capability — return to initial state cleanly Why not just React Query? React Query is excellent for caching, deduplication, and large-scale data orchestration. But sometimes you want something you fully own — no black boxes, no magic, no dependency debates in code review. usePromise gives you that. It's a foundation you understand end-to-end and can extend however you need. Why should this be standard? SOLID principles tell us: don't repeat yourself. Async data fetching is the most repeated pattern in every React application in existence. The framework gives us the primitives — useReducer, useCallback, useEffect — but leaves the wiring entirely to us. Every team solves this problem. Most teams solve it inconsistently. This hook is the consistent answer. Three years in, and the thing I keep coming back to is this: the first few years of your career build the developer you'll be. The habits, the patterns, the defaults you reach for. Reach for clean ones. Why "1" is not 1 in the world of Backend Development 🎭 Today’s debugging session in Express.js taught me that the smallest details—like a simple data type—can be the difference between a working app and a "401 Unauthorized" crash. While building a custom authentication middleware, I hit a wall. Even though I was sending the correct "secret" key, my server kept rejecting me. Here are the two big "Aha!" moments that fixed it: 1️⃣ HTTP Headers are ALWAYS Strings 🧵 No matter what you type into Postman or Thunder Client, when a header reaches your @Node.js server, it’s a String. My Mistake: Comparing req.headers.secret === 12345 (Strict Number check). The Reality: The server saw "12345". The Lesson: Always compare headers against String values! 2️⃣ The "Ghost Execution" Trap 👻 I learned that calling next() is like giving a "pass" to the next function, but it doesn't stop the current function from running its remaining lines. Without using return next(), your middleware can "leak" into lower lines of code, attempt to send a second response, and crash the server with a Headers Already Sent error. Progress Check: ✅ Custom Middleware Logic ✅ Mastered res.status() vs res.sendStatus() ✅ Deep understanding of Request Headers Big thanks to the @JavaScript and @freeCodeCamp communities for the constant inspiration to #BuildInPublic. 🚀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝘆 𝗡𝗼𝗱𝗲.𝗷𝘀 𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 I improved my 𝗡𝗼𝗱𝗲.𝗷𝘀 𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 by 𝟰𝟬% with just 𝟯 small changes. Here is what I learned 👇 While working on 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗣𝗜𝘀 using 𝗡𝗼𝗱𝗲.𝗷𝘀 and 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, I noticed some slow response issues. After analyzing the problem, I implemented these improvements: ⚡ 𝟭️⃣ 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴 This significantly improved query execution speed. ⚡ 𝟮️⃣ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 instead of loading large datasets This reduced server load and response time. ⚡ 𝟯️⃣ 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗰 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 and removed unnecessary loops This helped avoid blocking the event loop. 📈 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁: ✔ Faster API responses ✔ Better server performance ✔ Cleaner backend code 💡 Sometimes performance improvements don’t require complex architecture — just better coding practices. Now a days nodemon is not required at all. You can just use `--watch`` flag at your entry point command.
