𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟔/𝟑𝟎: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐏𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬? 🐍 Coming from C++, I’m used to the compiler being my safety net. If I try to add a string to an int there, the code won’t even run. ➡️ But yesterday I realized Python is... a different world! def add(a, b): return a + b add(10, "5")💣 Boom! Runtime Error In a tiny script, this is a 2-second fix.. But in a massive codebase with thousands of functions? This feels like a 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧. So, the real question for the experts here: How do you guys stop these "sneaky" errors before they hit production? Is it: A) Just remember everything B) Test everything thoroughly (Unit tests for every single edge case) C) Use Python type hints (a: int, b: int) (👀but do they actually stop the crash?) D) Something else(MyPy? Pylint?) I’ve been digging into this 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲. I’m hunting for a way to make Python feel just as safe as C++. When I set up a new agentic workflow, I don't write the Python scripts. Claude Code writes them. Each tool has one job. Scrape a site. Parse a response. Save a file. The agent builds them based on what the workflow needs. Here's the part that still surprises me. When a tool hits an error, the agent reads the message, looks up the fix, rewrites the script, and tests it again. I don't debug. I don't patch. It handles it. On one workflow, it hit a Unicode encoding issue on Windows. Found the problem, rewrote the function, verified the fix. 90 seconds. I'd have spent 20 minutes on that. ⭐ FME Tip #8: External Python Editing in FME Form One of the more practical improvements in FME Form is the ability to work on Python scripts in your preferred external editor. I already use VS Code heavily to test and run Python outside of FME, so being able to bring that same workflow into FME is a big win. Instead of writing everything inside FME’s editor, you can now: → open scripts in tools like VS Code or PyCharm → use proper code navigation, linting and debugging → stay within a familiar development environment Then bring those changes straight back into FME. It doesn’t change what FME can do, but it significantly improves how you build and maintain more complex workflows. Particularly useful when: → scripts start growing beyond a few lines → logic becomes harder to track → you need better debugging or refactoring It’s a small feature on paper, but a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for Python-heavy workspaces.
