Start Data Analytics with Excel, SQL, Power BI, Not Python

Many beginners in data analysis focus too much on tools like Python, R, Power BI, Tableau, and SQL. But real data analysis is not mainly about tools. It is about critical thinking, understanding the business problem, and deeply understanding the data. In many real projects, 80%–90% of the work is spent on: -understanding the problem -exploring and cleaning the data -validating the meaning of variables -checking assumptions -making sure the analysis answers the right question. If this part fails, the technical output has little value. A dashboard can look attractive and still be wrong. A machine learning model can be advanced and still solve the wrong problem. For example: Sales analysis Before jumping into tools, you must first know whether the drop is caused by region, product, season, price, or data quality. Hospital data Before analyzing the data, you must first define what “waiting time” actually means. So my advice to beginners is this: Do not learn only tools. Learn how to think. Learn how to ask. Learn how to understand the problem and the data. Because tools make you technical. I know, because I tried to learn all of them at once and learned none of them properly. This is the order that actually matters in your first 1-3 years: SQL first. Every data job touches a database. SQL is the language of data. It is not optional. Then Python for automation and analysis. Not all of Python. Learn the basics, learn pandas, numpy, then matplotlib. That is already more than most analysts use daily. Then one visualization tool. Pick one. Master it. Tableau and Power BI are both fine. Knowing one well is worth more than knowing both superficially. Everything else comes later, based on what your actual job requires. The analysts I have seen grow the fastest are not the ones who learned the most tools. They are the ones who learned fewer things deeply and could apply them confidently. 🚀 I thought SQL was just about writing queries… until I tried a real project. After learning Python OOP basics, I decided to challenge myself with SQL using a small dataset. At first, it was confusing. Tables… rows… joins… Nothing made complete sense. But then I started working on a simple scenario: 👉 “How can I extract meaningful insights from raw data?” That’s when things changed. 💡 I started with basic queries: SELECT * FROM data Then slowly moved to: ✔ Filtering specific data (WHERE) ✔ Sorting results (ORDER BY) ✔ Grouping data (GROUP BY) ✔ Combining tables using JOINs And suddenly… the data started telling a story 📊 I wasn’t just writing queries anymore — I was answering questions using data. 📌 Key takeaway: Learning SQL is easy. You want to become a data analyst… But you don’t know where to start. I’ve been there. At first, everything feels overwhelming—Python, SQL, Power BI, Excel… it’s easy to try learning everything at once and end up confused. But here’s what I’m learning: Start simple. Build step by step. ➡️ Start with Excel Learn how to clean data, organize it, and find basic insights. ➡️ Then move to SQL Understand how to query and work with databases. ➡️ Then move to Power BI Learn how to visualize and communicate your insights. A lot of people rush to Python because it sounds more “advanced.” But without a solid foundation, it just becomes frustrating. The goal isn’t to learn everything at once. After completing my first data analytics project, I realized something important. It’s not about the tools. That shift changed everything. Last month someone texted me after doing 6–7 data analytics courses. SQL, Python, Power BI… everything done. Still no job. He was like, “I don’t get what I’m missing anymore.” So I didn’t give him any advice. I just told him — open a dataset and tell me what decision a company should take from it. He tried. Kept scrolling. Filtering. Looking at numbers. Then after some time he said, “I don’t know what I’m supposed to find.” That moment said everything. It’s not that he didn’t know tools. He just didn’t know what to look for. And honestly, that’s where most people are stuck. They’re learning a lot… but no one tells them how to think. So we stopped everything else. No new courses. No tutorials. Just one focus: What is the problem here, and what can we actually do about it? Took a couple of weeks, but I could see the shift. He stopped trying to “use tools” and started trying to “understand the data.” Big difference. If you’re learning data analytics, try this once: Open any dataset and ask yourself — “If this was my company, what decision would I take here?” You’ll probably feel stuck. That’s normal. That’s also where things actually start getting better.

Curiosity is a gift for an Analyst. One common mistake I see beginners make in data analytics is becoming obsessed with tools. They spend months learning Power BI, SQL, Python, Excel, Tableau, and every new trending tool, believing tool mastery alone will make them a great analyst. But tools are only enablers. What actually separates a good analyst from an average one is curiosity. A strong analyst constantly asks: How is this metric calculated? Why is this trend happening? When did this change start? Why are users behaving differently? How can this process be improved? When should stakeholders take action? Without curiosity, analysis becomes dashboard decoration. You might know how to build visuals, write queries, or automate reports, but if you are not asking better questions, you are only producing outputs, not insights. Beginners should focus less on collecting tools like trophies and more on building analytical thinking. Learn to investigate. Learn to challenge assumptions. Learn to ask uncomfortable questions.
