❇️ AI App Builder Platform Test Part 1: Replit.com ❇️ Refresh... To test AI-powered app builders, I set out to create a custom Project Management tool for boutique pro-services firms. I wanted something lightweight for mobile users but robust enough for budgeting and business roll-ups. My platform needed task hierarchies, dependencies, T&M budgeting, and quoting. I knew I was probably asking too much before I started. I took my first run at the project using Replit.com, with React & TypeScript (and a later test using Svelte). Replit.com offers cloud-based development with strong GitHub integration and support for many languages, although its IDE feels more like classic developer tools than a GPT style tool that shields a user from the complexities of code. The interface includes a multi-tab editor, file tree, Git tools, and chat thread; welcoming to tinkering devs, but potentially daunting for those without some coding background. 👉 Set Reasonable Expectations Up Front Replit.com was fantastic for prototyping and it could handle moderate-complexity projects where you want hands-on control and code visibility. As soon as you add complex data relationships and workflows or external libraries, though, you realize you should have started with clearer specs, better-defined data models, and solid story telling chops. If you supply ambiguous specs, you will hit walls when troubleshooting, especially when Replit’s AI Agent/Assistant makes project-level assumptions that later cause bugs or confusion in view layouts. I quickly learned that version control with GitHub is essential for serious work. I had to rollback on multiple occasions, which I could usually do with Replit's internal checkpoints, but which sometimes required Git pulls. 👉 BTW... for multi-tenant/multi-user, professional-level security, authentication, or robust integrations, you *must* define those features up front or you *will* get jammed up when you try to host your app. UI is another important consideration. Replit’s UI choices generally clean but lack best practice sophistication or eye appeal. After hitting a brick wall with Replit’s reliance on my UI eye, I fell back to SVAR.dev’s React libraries for Data Grid, Gantt, and Editor features. That enabled in-cell editing in the Task view, drag-and-drop dependencies in Gantt, and a real dashboard utility. ✳️ The bottom line… ✳️ Replit shines for tinkerers and learners. For polished, complex apps, success requires careful planning, comfort with development concepts, external libraries, and strong version control. If you bring clear wireframes, data models, and use GitHub Replit will help you bring ideas to life. Just be ready for some rabbit holes along the way. I’ve easily spent 1,000+ hours using AI to build real apps for myself and for clients. Here’s what actually moves the needle for me (not sponsored or affiliated with any of this, just what I personally use): 1. *Don’t wing it* “Use this one magic prompt to ship working apps” is a fantasy. You need structure. You need something to manage context and break work into pieces. Some people like: Brian BMad Madison’s BMAD method Ryan Carson’s “3 file” method Both are better than nothing. They just didn’t work great for me. The only thing I actually like is GitHub’s spec-kit: https://lnkd.in/eEYXmRDX It forces you to write down what you’re building before you ask the model to write code. That alone prevents a ton of chaos. 2. *Demos are easy. Real projects are not.* Greenfield = brand-new project you control. Brownfield = real-world project with existing code and other devs. All the “look what I built in 10 minutes with AI!” videos are greenfield demos. Real work is brownfield: old code, other people’s decisions, tech debt. If you don’t have rules, AI + humans in that environment can be a disaster. What helps: > Use branch-based development. Always. > Open pull requests. Review them. Merge them. Religiously. > Use something like CodeRabbit to catch bugs in PRs: https://www.coderabbit.ai/ AI is powerful, but without basic Git hygiene you just create mess faster. 3. *Use more than one model brain* Claude Code is great. Cursor 2.0 with its multi-agent “workforce” on Git worktrees is great too. My pattern: Let one model be the workhorse (for me that’s Claude Sonnet 4.5 most of the time). Every so often, bring in a second model to critique and review: GPT-5 Cursor’s Composer Grok Whatever strong model you like You’d be shocked how often the “reviewer” model catches issues that Sonnet confidently says are fine, especially when Sonnet has already tried and failed to fix a bug a couple of times. Treat models like teammates: one builds, another reviews. 4. *MCPs: not magic, just tools* MCPs are wildly misunderstood. A lot of non-technical people talk about them like they’re some mystical thing… and then stop actually learning. MCP = a way to plug external tools into your LLM. That’s it. Connecting 50 tools to one LLM does not turn you into the Avengers. Most of the time it: Adds noise Burns through context window Makes the system harder to reason about My rule: I use 2 MCPs about 95% of the time. I only add a 3rd if I can clearly justify it. The ones I actually use: Context7 – to quickly reference 3rd-party library docs and code patterns Playwright or Chrome DevTools – for browser automation / debugging, so I don’t have to constantly alt-tab between error logs and the UI. From No-Code to LangGraph: When Your Automations Need to Grow Up No-code tools like n8n, Make, and Gumloop are the gateway drug of automation. They get you thinking in systems — drag, drop, connect — and suddenly you’ve built a “GPT-powered summarizer” in 20 minutes. But eventually, every builder hits the same three walls: 1️⃣ Complexity – Your elegant flowchart becomes spaghetti. Debugging turns into archaeology. 2️⃣ Scale – It works fine at 10 ops, dies at 100. No version control, no concurrency, no rollback. 3️⃣ Evolution – You can’t reuse logic or collaborate. AI copilots can’t “see” your visual flows. At some point, you need to graduate — not away from automation, but toward code that scales. That’s where LangGraph (by LangChain) comes in. You still define nodes and edges, but in a real codebase — complete with debugging, Git, modularity, and async performance. The best part? You don’t have to start from scratch. You can use AI to translate your n8n workflows into maintainable LangGraph code. Here’s the three-step process teams are using right now: Step 1: Generate a PRD (Project Requirements Document) Feed your n8n JSON export to a reasoning LLM like Claude Opus. It analyzes triggers, nodes, and logic to produce a prd.md — a full technical blueprint explaining what your workflow does and how it works. → This becomes your contract between design and code. Step 2: Document Custom Nodes For every n8n “Function” or “Code” node, have the AI output a detailed spec: - Purpose, inputs/outputs - Dependencies and logic flow - Equivalent Node.js/Python strategy Save each as /req-for-custom-nodes/<node>.md — a modular breakdown that eliminates ambiguity before implementation. Step 3: Generate LangGraph Code Feed the AI all your assets: - The PRD - The original n8n JSON - The custom node specs - The model cross-references everything and outputs a runnable LangGraph app — complete with function structure, state management, and async orchestration. → The result: production-grade automation that’s testable, scalable, and version-controlled. This isn’t about replacing no-code. It’s about evolving it. AI doesn’t just automate your tasks — it helps you translate intent into architecture. Our team has just been migrating a legacy AngularJS (v1) app to React. They decided to use AI to help. Full story here: https://lnkd.in/eSzkdFRw Key takeaways: - One of the biggest early wins has been seeing how well AI performs when given structure. The DSL and master prompt gave the AI clear rails to follow, which dramatically improved consistency and reduced errors. The more structured we made the input, the better the output became. -We also learned that prompt design matters, and it matters a lot. Small tweaks to wording - even just changing the order of examples - had a noticeable impact on quality. It felt less like engineering and more like UX design: shaping the environment so the AI could succeed. - We confirmed what we suspected going in: human oversight is absolutely necessary. AI can draft, assist, and scaffold, but it can’t reason about domain logic or architecture. Someone still needs to know what the component is for and where it fits into the broader system. - There were some pleasant side effects too, of course! Our Storybook usage matured quickly, turning into a proper source of truth and prompted us to learn more about it and expand its usage across the projects - personally, that's my favourite out of this experience! - Lastly, it became clear that AI is not a magic wand - but it is a productivity tool when used deliberately. You need a strategy, you need structure, and you need someone behind the wheel.
