🚀 Today’s session on Express.js was excellent! Huge learning from the class taken by Hitesh Choudhary Sir. Some days you attend a class… Other days you attend a class that changes how you think about backend development. Today was one of those days. 💡 Here are a few concepts that really clicked for me 👇 🧠 Setting up a Node.js project Understanding the basic structure is the first step to building scalable backend apps. ⚙️ Middleware in Express Middleware works like checkpoints between request and response, where code can process or modify data before sending it back. 🛠 Built-in vs Custom Middleware Express gives built-in tools, but you can also write your own middleware to handle tasks like authentication or logging. 🔗 Express works with chaining Requests pass through multiple functions step-by-step until a response is returned. 🌐 URL Queries In a URL, query parameters start after the ? symbol. 💻 Interesting trick I learned Using port 0 lets the operating system automatically assign a free port to your server. Every session reminds me how deep the JavaScript ecosystem really is. #MERNStackLearning – #Day60 at Skill Shikshya Today I focused on practicing Express routing and understanding how to work with user data stored in a JSON file. I worked on creating routes to display all users and also implemented dynamic routing to fetch a specific user using their ID. I learned how route parameters work (req.params) . I also understood how middleware flow affects route execution and fixed an issue where my routes were not working because of incorrect middleware usage. Today’s practice included: ✔ Creating Express Router ✔ Reading JSON data using fs module ✔ Implementing dynamic routes (/users/:id) ✔ Finding specific user data using array methods ✔ Handling cases when user is not found Small improvements like these are helping me understand how backend APIs actually work step by step. 🚀 Understanding Middleware in Express.js When building APIs with Node.js and Express, every request does not directly reach the route handler. Instead, it passes through a chain of functions called middleware. Middleware functions sit between the incoming request and the final response, allowing developers to process requests in multiple stages. Each middleware function has access to: • "req" → Request object • "res" → Response object • "next()" → Function that passes control to the next middleware This architecture allows us to build scalable and maintainable backend systems. Common use cases of middleware include: 🔹 Logging incoming requests 🔹 Authentication & authorization 🔹 Request validation 🔹 Error handling 🔹 Security enhancements Example: app.use((req, res, next) => { console.log("Request received:", req.method, req.url); next(); }); If "next()" is not called, the request will remain stuck and never reach the route handler. Middleware is one of the core concepts of Express.js, and mastering it helps developers design cleaner and more modular backend applications. 🚀 Day 17 – Advanced Node.js Learning Journey Today I explored how to work with the file system in Node.js and handle files efficiently in backend applications. File handling is a common requirement in real-world apps, whether it’s uploading files, reading data, or processing logs. 💡 **What I learned today: • Using the built-in fs module to read and write files • Understanding synchronous vs asynchronous file operations • Handling large files efficiently using streams • Managing file uploads and basic processing Here’s a simple example I practiced One key takeaway was understanding why asynchronous file handling is important to avoid blocking the event loop. Working with files gave me more confidence in building backend features that deal with real-world data and storage. Its been a minute working Nestjs... Flexibility is key in modern API development. That's why I've embraced a hybrid approach in my backend using NestJS, and it's a game-changer. My single NestJS application serves both a traditional REST API and a powerful GraphQL API, giving us the best of both worlds. For standard CRUD operations? REST endpoints are fast, simple, and reliable. For complex data fetching on the client-side? GraphQL lets our frontend ask for exactly what it needs, reducing over-fetching and improving performance. And how do we secure it all? With a unified token-based authentication system. JWTs (JSON Web Tokens) protect every request, whether it's to a REST controller or a GraphQL resolver, ensuring consistent security across the board. Kudos to the NestJS framework for making sophisticated architectures like this not only possible but also maintainable and scalable. Familarity with Java notations is a banger when developing APIs with Nestjs. Hitesh Choudhary “Production” used to scare me. It always felt like something only experienced developers deal with… Something you touch only after finishing courses, building projects, and “being ready.” But in this backend lecture, something unexpected happened. I deployed early. Not a perfect app. Not a polished project. Just a simple backend… running live. And that changed everything. 💻 Here’s what I actually did: • Set up a Node.js project from scratch • Created a server using Express • Learned why .env files are critical (and how mistakes can expose secrets) • Understood the real flow: Localhost ➝ GitHub ➝ Live Server No shortcuts. No magic tools. Just understanding how things actually work. 💡 The biggest realization? “Production” is not a big scary thing. It’s just: Your code A server Someone sending a request That’s it.
