6 seconds → 1.8 seconds. Same API. Same backend. Same database. No caching. No CDN. No infrastructure changes. Just one JavaScript concept many frontend engineers learn too late. The dashboard of a web app I worked on took ~6 seconds to become interactive. Not because the API was slow. Each API request took around 300–400ms. The real problem? They were running one after another. Load user profile → wait Load notifications → wait Load analytics → wait Load activity feed → wait 12 requests × ~350ms = 4+ seconds of pure waiting. Add rendering time and network overhead… now you’re at ~6 seconds. The fix was simple: Run requests in parallel. Instead of this: fetchProfile() → wait → fetchNotifications() → wait → fetchAnalytics() We changed it to: Promise.all([ fetchProfile(), fetchNotifications(), fetchAnalytics(), fetchActivity() ]) Now all requests run at the same time. The page only waits for the slowest one. Result: 6 seconds → 1.8 seconds. Same APIs. Same backend. Just a better execution strategy. But there’s a catch many developers miss. The Loading State Problem. When requests run in parallel you must handle: • partial failures • loading states • race conditions • inconsistent UI Without proper state management, the UI becomes messy. Frontend performance is often not about complex optimizations. Sometimes it’s just about removing unnecessary waiting. Client-side fetching is officially a "Legacy" move 🛑 We’ve all been there: a React page loads, then a spinner appears, then another spinner inside a child component. This "Waterfall" effect is a UX killer. In 2026, the standard is moving data fetching to the server. With React Server Components (RSC), we’re finally fetching data where it lives, close to the database. This means sending zero JavaScript to the client for data-heavy sections. The result? Sub-100ms LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) and a much cleaner codebase. Took me a while to figure out why POST worked but GET didn't. 🔸 Folder structure in mono-repos — deploying a nested folder (MERN-PROJECTS/project1/backend) to Render required setting the Root Directory path correctly. Small config, big impact. 🔸 AI accelerates but doesn't replace — I used Claude to generate the frontend scaffold and debug errors faster. 🚀 How I Build Projects: Frontend First, Always. When I started building my latest project, I had a choice — where do I begin? Backend? Database? Architecture docs? Nope. I opened my code editor and started with the UI. Here's my stack & strategy 👇 🛠️ Stack: Next.js + MongoDB 🎯 My Approach — Frontend First: I always start with the frontend, and here's the honest reason why... When I build the UI first, I can see what I'm creating. There's something incredibly motivating about watching a page come to life on your screen. It keeps the energy alive. It keeps me going. Starting with a blank backend? That's invisible work. No dopamine hit. No "wow, this is actually happening" moment. But when you see your design render in the browser for the first time — that's fuel. 📐 My Design Principles: → Build what you can see first → Let the UI decisions guide your data models → Understand your product before you architect the backend → Ship something that feels real, fast ⚙️ Then comes the backend: Once the frontend is shaped, I know exactly what API routes I need, what data structures make sense, and how MongoDB should be modeled. The backend becomes a reaction to a clear vision — not a guess. Frontend-first isn't just a workflow. It's a mindset. Build the dream first. Make it real after. We don’t talk enough about this: useEffect might be the most overused hook in React. After reading a thread by Alvin Sng, I started questioning a default assumption I’ve had for years: “just put it in useEffect.” Thread: https://lnkd.in/djZfqRUp  React docs (“You Might Not Need an Effect”): https://lnkd.in/d9dSAnnT The more I think about it, the more it feels like a design smell — not a solution. Especially in modern codebases (and even more with AI-generated code): 1. Dependency arrays hide coupling 2. Effects create invisible control flow 3. Small “just in case” logic turns into race conditions fast It made me step back and rethink React from a system design perspective: Instead of asking “where do I put this effect?” I’m starting to ask “why does this side effect exist at all?” That shift alone changes how you design components. Some patterns that feel more system-friendly: • Derive state instead of syncing it: If something can be computed, it probably should be. • Push side effects to the edges: Keep core components predictable. Treat effects like I/O boundaries. • Use dedicated data-fetching layers (TanStack Query, SWR, etc.): Fetching inside components feels more like legacy now. • Let events drive behavior: User action → handler → result. No indirection. • Use component boundaries intentionally: Reset state with keys. Lift orchestration up. Keep children simple. It’s already shifting how I approach frontend architecture and think about control flow in React. Feels less like “avoiding a hook” and more like designing systems with clearer control flow. But what really speeds up the workflow is pairing them with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui. You get total control over your styling without sacrificing speed, and you aren't fighting against rigid component libraries. It just looks incredibly clean out of the box. The Backend: A beautiful UI needs a rock-solid foundation. Relying on Node.js and TypeScript is standard now, but wrapping that in NestJS brings a level of enterprise-grade architecture that keeps the backend predictable, modular, and easy to maintain as the team grows. The Data Layer: This is where the magic happens. Good old SQL is still the undisputed king. Having a reliable ORM bridges the gap perfectly between your TypeScript logic and the database. Whether you are scaling up with robust PostgreSQL for heavy production loads, or utilizing incredibly fast, lightweight solutions like SQLite and PGLite for local development and edge computing—data management has never been more flexible.
