When I first started learning object-oriented programming (OOP), a lot of the SOLID principles felt abstract. But the one that really started to click for me over time was the **Liskov Substitution Principle (LSP)**. At a high level, LSP says that *subtypes must be substitutable for their base types without breaking the program*. That sounded formal at first, but here’s how I think about it now: If I write code that uses a base class, I should be able to swap in any subclass—and everything should still work exactly as expected. Let’s say I have a `Bird` class. In my head, it feels natural to create subclasses like `Sparrow` or `Eagle`. And if my design is solid, I should be able to use those subclasses anywhere I use `Bird` without worrying about weird bugs or broken behavior. That’s where LSP really matters. It’s not just about inheritance—it’s about **behavior**. I’ve learned that things can go wrong when a subclass doesn’t truly match the expectations of the parent class. That’s when you start seeing unexpected behavior, and your “clean” design begins to fall apart. So to keep things in check, I try to remember a few simple rules: * Don’t change how methods are supposed to behave * Don’t make things harder for whoever is calling your code * Don’t break the promises made by the parent class * Keep everything consistent with the original design Once I started paying attention to LSP, my code became a lot easier to work with. I can: * Add new subclasses without rewriting existing code * Reuse code more confidently * Avoid those subtle, frustrating bugs that show up later For me, LSP comes down to trust. If I design a base class, I want to trust that any subclass will behave the way I expect. If I can swap it in without thinking twice, I probably did it right.

That’s not how real projects work.
