From 0 to 1... but for a compiler? 🤯 This wasn't just another class project. This was a deep dive into the absolute soul of computing. And it almost broke me. I remember staring at lines of unyielding C code at 3 AM. The parser was giving me errors that made no sense. The lexer was chewing up my input and spitting out garbage. I was leading a team, and I felt like I was leading them directly into a dead end. There was a moment when I almost threw in the towel. It felt too complex, too abstract. But then, that single, crucial, beautiful 'aha!' moment hit. A single grammar rule, finally, clicked. The syntax tree aligned, the three-address code started flowing, and the first expression successfully compiled. That was the moment LexiTAC was truly born. The relief was tangible; the sense of accomplishment, immense. I'm incredibly proud to share LexiTAC, the culmination of my CSE314 — Compiler Design Lab project at Daffodil International University. 🚀 What LexiTAC does: It's a complete compiler front-end, transforming source code into an intermediate, optimized format (Three-Address Code). But more importantly, it's about visualization. I built an interactive web simulator so you can see exactly how the compiler works, step by step. Compiler design is the study of how to create a Compiler. A compiler converts high-level code like C++ or Java into machine-understandable instructions. 🔹 Example Source code: a = b + c; Compiler may translate it into lower-level steps like: LOAD b ADD c STORE a 🔹 Main Phases of Compiler Design 1. Lexical Analysis Breaks code into tokens. Example: int x = 5; → int, x, =, 5, ; Often uses Finite Automaton. 2. Syntax Analysis (Parsing) Checks grammar rules. Example: Is x = + 5 valid? Can AI agents build software that comes with a mathematical proof that it works? At Basis Research Institute, we set four agents to build a verified compiler. Compilers are large, complex pieces of engineering, deep in the software stack. Anthropic recently showed that agents can build one from scratch. We wanted to ask the next question: can they build one that is verified correct? A verified compiler is one that comes with a machine-checked proof that it is mathematically correct. Most software is checked by running it on examples and checking its behaviour matches expectations. A proof guarantees it works on every example, including the ones no one ran. We tasked a team of agents to build a verified JS-to-WASM compiler in Lean. Over 14 days they wrote 93,000 lines of code and produced a compiler that ran. But they did not prove it correct. The agents built an interpreter, a target semantics, and the compiler between them. But the proofs never closed. They repeated broken strategies across sessions, forgot what had failed, and wrote the same lemma 122 times rather than abstracting it once. In Rust, this compiler performance tweak that merges functions has to be handled with caution! ⚠️ 🦀 You’ve probably heard this advice before: “Small functions are cheap—don’t worry about them.” That’s usually true… until you start chasing performance. Because under the hood, every function call still has a cost: ▪️ jumping to another location in memory ▪️ setting up a stack frame ▪️ returning back So what if you could just… remove that call entirely? 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠? Inlining means the compiler replaces a function call with the actual code of that function. Instead of: ▪️ jumping to another function ▪️ then coming back …the compiler just puts the function’s code directly where it’s used. This removes the cost of calling the function and helps the compiler optimize better. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐬𝐭 #[inline] fn add(a: i32, b: i32) -> i32 { a + b } --------------- #[inline(always)] fn fast(x: i32) -> i32 { x * 2 } --------------- #[inline(never)] fn slow() { println!("Not important for performance"); } --------------- #[𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞] → “you can inline this” #[𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞(𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬)] → “please always inline this” #[𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞(𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫)] → “don’t inline this” These are hints to the compiler. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫? Inlining helps because: ▪️ No function call overhead ▪️ The compiler can better optimize the code ▪️ It can simplify or remove unnecessary work That’s how Rust keeps abstractions fast. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 Inlining copies code everywhere. Too much of it: ▪️ makes your program bigger ▪️ hurts CPU cache usage (very bad!) ▪️ can actually slow things down 𝐀 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 Instead of inlining everything: ▪️ Inline small, important functions (hot path) ▪️ Keep bigger, less-used logic separate (cold path) This keeps performance high and avoids bloating your code. In other words, if the code is not part of a critical path, don't inline it! Inlining is powerful—but only when used carefully. Have you ever had issues with inlining? Some of the best writing on software does not try to impress you with complexity. It tries to remove fear. I enjoyed reading James Hague’s article “Want to Write a Compiler? Just Read These Two Papers.” His central point is refreshing. Compiler construction is often presented as something heavy, distant and overly academic, when in practice it can be approached in a far more direct and understandable way. What stood out to me most is the idea that we should stop treating compilers as mythical machines that only a small elite can understand. The article highlights Jack Crenshaw’s Let’s Build a Compiler! as a practical way to make the subject accessible, and it also points to the nanopass approach as a powerful reminder that a compiler can be seen as a sequence of small transformations rather than one giant mystery. That idea applies far beyond compiler design. A lot of difficult engineering becomes clearer when we break it into simple passes, simple representations and simple steps. Good systems are often not built by making everything bigger. They are built by making each part easier to understand. This is also a reminder that technical education should help people build real things early. Too much theory without construction can make important fields feel inaccessible. The best material does the opposite. It gives people confidence to start. That is the kind of computing writing I respect most. Clear, practical and empowering. 🚀 Jetpack Compose — What actually happens inside @Composable? (Deep Dive) @Composable is not just an annotation. It's a promise to the compiler: 👉 "please transform me." Think of the Compose compiler like a secret assistant that rewrites your code before the JVM sees it. Step 1 — You write this @Composable fun Greeting(name: String) { Text("Hello, $name") } Step 2 — Compiler transformation The compiler secretly adds two hidden parameters: fun Greeting( name: String, $composer: Composer, $changed: Int ) • $composer → Tracks position in UI tree (SlotTable) • $changed → Bitmask → tells if inputs changed 👉 This is how Compose decides whether to skip execution Step 3 — Restart group (Recomposition scope) $composer.startRestartGroup(KEY) // UI code $composer.endRestartGroup()?.updateScope { c, _ -> Greeting(name, c, 1) } 👉 Registers a stored lambda 👉 Allows recomposition of ONLY this scope (not whole UI) Step 4 — Smart skipping At runtime, Compose checks: 👉 “Did anything change?” • If NO → entire function is skipped (zero work) • If YES → function re-executes 👉 This is the core performance optimization Step 5 — remember {} becomes SlotTable read val count = remember { mutableStateOf(0) } ➡️ Transforms into: val count = $composer.cache(false) { mutableStateOf(0) } 👉 Stored in SlotTable 👉 Retrieved by position 👉 Survives recomposition 🧠 Interview Summary "@Composable is a compiler transformation where functions are converted into restartable groups tracked by a Composer.
