The Lesson: Check the Fundamentals: Once I updated the version to a stable release and reinstalled, the app finally breathed life. Beware the Force: Flushed with success, I saw those "vulnerability" warnings and ran the --force fix. It almost crushed the entire project. Why? Building browser extensions has been one of those experiences that looks simple from the outside… but feels completely different once you get into it. At first, it’s not the coding that challenges you — it’s the architecture. You’re suddenly dealing with: • Multiple environments (popup, background, content scripts) • Messaging between different layers • Strict permissions and manifest rules • Debugging across separate consoles And honestly, that’s where most of the friction comes from. But here’s the interesting part — once the mental model clicks, everything starts to feel structured and predictable. It shifts from “Why is nothing working?” → to → “Okay, I know exactly where this belongs.” That’s when real progress happens. One thing that helped me: Break the system into layers and build step by step instead of trying to solve everything at once. Most devs still write form backends in 2026. It's the most embarrassing secret in our industry and nobody says it out loud. You start a new landing page. You need a contact form. Thirty minutes later you're writing an API route, wiring SMTP, setting CORS, adding rate limits, filtering spam, testing bounces. Then deploying it. Then babysitting it when it breaks at 2am on a Saturday. All of that for a form that will get maybe 20 messages a month. Contact forms are the last unautomated primitive of the modern web stack. Chrome DevTools MCP now lets your coding agent run Lighthouse audits, detect memory leaks, debug accessibility, and optimize LCP. Quality checks just moved from CI into the dev loop. The shift: perf and a11y tooling usually runs after a PR is up. By then context is gone and you are debugging cold. Memory leak detection is the sneaky win here. Heap snapshots are brutal, most devs give up before finding root cause. An agent profiling in the background changes the economics of even looking. 📌 Your backend says success, but the user sees an error. Who’s wrong? ❗ Neither. 🚫 “It works on my machine” is not a flex… It’s a warning sign. I shipped a feature recently that worked perfectly locally. Clean UI. Smooth interactions. No errors. A recent reminder from shipping: Deployment bugs are often not hard in the glamorous sense. They are hard because they are layered. I spent time untangling a deployment where the app itself was healthy, but the live behavior was still wrong because of a stack of overlapping issues: - static vs Node serving behavior - nginx/proxy confusion - env exposure problems - domain/site rename fallout - PM2 pointing at the wrong working directory That kind of debugging is humbling because each layer can look basically fine in isolation. This is why I do not trust simple explanations too early in infra work. A green process list does not mean the app is reachable. A correct cert does not mean the site is serving the right thing. A working backend does not mean the browser got what it needed. A lot of real engineering is just patient narrowing: What is actually healthy? What only looks healthy? What is true at the layer above? It is not glamorous. But it is real.
