Building My First Real Backend System Most people say “I know Spring Boot.” I wanted proof. So I built a Banking Management System from scratch. Not just theory — actual REST APIs for: ->Account creation ->Transaction handling ->Balance tracking I worked on structuring the backend properly, connecting it with MySQL, and ensuring data flows correctly between layers. What I realized quickly: Backend development is not about writing APIs — it’s about designing systems that don’t break under real scenarios. Handling validation, structuring data, and thinking about edge cases changed how I approach coding. We had to switch payment gateways last year. The actual payment logic? Didn't change. Same amount, same customer, same order. What broke everything was this: Service A wanted different JSON format: Service B wanted different JSON format Same data. Completely different shape. And both want the amount in cents, not dollars. And both have their own status codes in the response — Service A returns "succeeded", Service B returns "captured" our service used 0 and 1. Both mean SUCCESS on our end. So we ended up with two DTOs, two mappers, and two places to break. I got tired of this and built a library that handles it differently. You just define the mapping once in a config file. Want to switch to Service A? Change one word. That's it. But the part I'm most happy with is transforms. The transforms handle the messy parts. Dollar to cents, status code normalization, phone masking — you register them once and reuse across every mapping. Works on the response side too. Their status codes map back to yours automatically. No new DTOs. No new mappers. Just a config file. I know this isn't a groundbreaking computer science problem, but it's the kind of thing that wastes hours every few months in almost every backend project I've seen. Built it in Spring Boot. Started building an offline-first UPI payment system in Java + Spring Boot. The core problem: digital payments fail when internet drops. Most solutions assume connectivity. This one doesn't. Day 1 focused on foundations- Account and Transaction models, initial settlement logic, REST APIs for testing, and H2 for rapid prototyping (PostgreSQL planned next for persistent storage and scale). But the more interesting work was defining the real engineering challenges: • How do you prevent the same payment from being processed twice when multiple relay devices forward it simultaneously? • How do you ensure an intercepted payment packet from yesterday cannot be replayed today? • How do you route payment data through untrusted devices without those devices being able to read it? I’ve been working on strengthening my Java fundamentals, and I built a basic small banking system to put those concepts into practice.Not just watching tutorial. This is a console-based application, but the goal wasn’t just to “make it work”—I focused on writing cleaner and more structured code. What it currently supports:User login system,Deposit and withdrawal operations,Balance checking,Transaction history Simple menu-driven flow While building this, I spent time understanding how to properly use OOP concepts like encapsulation, abstraction, and interfaces. One change that really improved the code was moving all the logic out of the main method into a separate BankApp class. That made the program easier to read and extend. I also used an interface (Accountable) to define the core banking operations, which helped me think more in terms of design rather than just implementation. 🚀 From Writing APIs to Thinking in Systems For a long time, my focus as a backend developer was simple: Write APIs. Fix bugs. Deliver features. But recently, while building a microservices-based system, something changed. I started thinking beyond code: • What happens if a service goes down? • How do systems handle failures gracefully? • How do multiple services communicate reliably? That’s when concepts like API Gateway, Circuit Breakers, and JWT authentication started making real sense. It made me realize: 👉 Writing code is important 👉 But designing systems is what makes you grow as an engineer Still learning, still improving—but enjoying the process of thinking at a deeper level. Understanding HTTP Status Codes Today I focused on an important concept in backend development — HTTP Status Codes While building REST APIs, it’s not just about sending data, but also about sending the right response to the client. 🔹 Learned about different categories of status codes: • 2xx (Success) – 200 OK, 201 Created • 4xx (Client Errors) – 400 Bad Request, 404 Not Found • 5xx (Server Errors) – 500 Internal Server Error 🔹 Understood when to use each status code in real APIs 🔹 Implemented status handling using "ResponseEntity" in Spring Boot This helped me realize how APIs communicate clearly with frontend applications and handle errors properly. Small concept, but very powerful in building real-world applications. Started Day 2 on my offline-first UPI payment system in Java + Spring Boot. Today’s focus was moving beyond basic money transfer APIs into something real products need: transaction history. Built a recent transactions endpoint that returns the last activity for a user instead of dumping raw database rows. Also started shaping responses through DTO mapping so customers only see relevant data like amount, status, counterparty, and transaction type (Sent / Received) — not internal fields. One underrated part of backend development: debugging response serialization, mapping layers, and edge cases often takes more effort than writing the endpoint itself. That’s where real learning happens. Something that made backend development much clearer for me 👇 👉 Understanding the layered approach Earlier, I used to write everything in one place — controllers handling logic, database calls, everything. It worked… but it got messy really fast. Now I’m trying to follow a simple structure: • Controller → handles request & response • Service → contains business logic • Repository → interacts with database So the flow looks like this: 👉 Controller → Service → Repository → Database What this changed for me: ✔ Code feels more organized ✔ Easier to debug issues ✔ Logic is reusable ✔ Changes don’t break everything It’s a small shift, but it makes a big difference as projects grow. Still learning, but trying to write cleaner code step by step. Project 1 - Console Based Banking application using Java Today I did something different. Instead of just learning concepts and moving on… I decided to apply everything in one place. While learning Java, I noticed a pattern: Write one example → understand → forget → move ahead. Same with DSA… We rarely use core Java concepts like OOP while solving problems. So before jumping into Spring Boot, I decided to build a console-based banking application. --- 💻 What I built: A simple system where you can: • Open an account • Deposit & withdraw money • Check balance • View account statements • List all accounts No database — just pure Java logic. --- 🧠 Key Learnings: 🔹 Interfaces as contracts → Defined clear rules for services and made code flexible 🔹 Using Map for data storage → Simulated database-like behavior in-memory 🔹 Project structure → Understood the purpose of Repository (data handling) and Service (business logic) 🔹 SOLID Principles → Wrote cleaner, maintainable, and scalable code 🔹 Lambda Expressions → Made code more concise and readable 🔹 Custom Exceptions → Handled edge cases like insufficient balance, account not found, etc. in a clean way 🔹 Hands-on experience → Biggest learning: concepts make more sense when you build something real --- 💡 Realization: You don’t truly understand Java by reading or solving small snippets… you understand it by building systems.
