Could even make use of farm land, providing a much needed revenue boost to the farming community. All those fields next to motorways with 500,000 people passing everyday.

Probably, we can monitor the condition of forests using them. May help prevent forest fires, or help manage them quickly to reduce the damage.
This has nothing to do with AI though. Its just preprogrammed flying and light paths. Maybe the paths are calculated using AI but it wouldnt need AI for that, its not that complicated. Some collision avoidance.
