No expression repetition. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘅𝗲𝘀, 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 Free-form SQL and the structured COL/VAL/COMP pattern can coexist in the same clause: WHERE O.AMOUNT > 100 AND IF(COL=O.REGION, VAL='EMEA', COMP=EQ) 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠-𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲-𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 Standard SQL reads SELECT before FROM, so the parser cannot resolve column references until after the table is known. That forces two-phase resolution: allocate placeholders, then discard and replace them. For 25 column refs, up to 50 intermediate objects per query. AUREON SQL offers FROM first, then SELECT. The table is known before the column list is parsed — every reference resolves directly to a final object. At 50,000 queries/sec with 15 column refs average, that removes roughly 1.5 million intermediate allocations per second. Not reduced. Absent. The standard syntax remains fully valid. The alternative is there when you want the parser to have the table context first. SQL was conceived as a language business users could write themselves. 📊 SQL Concepts I Revisited Recently — and Why They Matter More Than You Think! As someone working in the tech space, I always knew SQL was important. But recently when I sat down to truly practice it, I realised how many small but critical mistakes we make without even noticing. Here are 13 concepts that genuinely changed how I think about writing queries: 1️⃣ NULL is special Never compare NULL with = — it will always fail silently. Always use IS NULL or IS NOT NULL 2️⃣ WHERE vs HAVING WHERE filters rows before grouping. HAVING filters after grouping and only works with aggregate functions. Mixing these up is one of the most common SQL mistakes! 3️⃣ GROUP BY logic Always group by the column you want to summarise across — not the unique ID. Grouping by a unique ID defeats the entire purpose! 4️⃣ Finding duplicates GROUP BY + HAVING COUNT > 1 is your best friend here. Simple but powerful. 5️⃣ Finding missing records LEFT JOIN on the table you want all records from + IS NULL on the right table column — this pattern will save you in real investigations! 6️⃣ Aggregate functions belong in HAVING Never use SUM, COUNT or AVG in WHERE — they only work after grouping happens. 7️⃣ Subqueries When you can't answer something in one step — break it into two. Inner query runs first, outer query uses that result. 8️⃣ CASE WHEN SQL's version of IF/ELSE. Cleaner than you think and incredibly useful for handling NULLs and conditional logic. 9️⃣ SELECT with GROUP BY When using GROUP BY, your SELECT can only have the grouped column or aggregate functions. No individual columns allowed! 🔟 COUNT vs COUNT(DISTINCT) COUNT(column) counts everything including duplicates. COUNT(DISTINCT column) counts only unique values. Know when to use which! 1️⃣1️⃣ JOIN direction matters Always start your JOIN from the table you want all records from — the direction changes your entire result set! 1️⃣2️⃣ When to use which JOIN Want all records from one side → LEFT JOIN Want only matching records → INNER JOIN 1️⃣3️⃣ Finding missing records using JOINs LEFT JOIN on the main table + IS NULL on the right table column = powerful pattern to find records that don't exist in another table! When a Space in Table Name Broke Production Recently, I encountered an interesting issue while working with dynamic SQL in a stored procedure. Everything was working fine until suddenly the job started failing with: "Incorrect syntax near 'A'" At first glance, the query looked perfectly valid. But the issue was not in the logic, it was hidden in the data. A Subquery is a query written inside another SQL query. 👉 It helps break complex problems into smaller logical steps 👉 Executes first and provides results to the outer query SELECT column_name FROM table_name WHERE column_name = (SELECT column_name FROM table_name); 🔹 Where Subqueries Can Be Used? ✔ Inside SELECT ✔ Inside WHERE ✔ Inside FROM (Derived tables) 🔹 Types of Subqueries (Deep Understanding) ✅ 1. Day 4 of 7: LEARNING SQL IN PUBLIC Today, I learned about OUTER JOINs across multiple tables, SELF OUTER JOIN, and the USING clause. 🔹 OUTER JOIN Across Multiple Tables You can use LEFT JOIN multiple times to combine several related tables while still keeping all records from the main table. Example: SELECT c.customer_id, c.first_name, o.order_id, sh.name AS shipper FROM customers c LEFT JOIN orders o ON c.customer_id = o.customer_id LEFT JOIN shippers sh ON o.shipper_id = sh.shipper_id ORDER BY c.customer_id; Explanation: Starts from the customers table Joins: • orders: to get order details • shippers: to get delivery company Because it’s a LEFT JOIN: • All customers are returned • If a customer has no order: order_id = NULL • If no shipper: shipper = NULL 🔹 ADDING ANOTHER TABLE SELECT c.customer_id, c.first_name, o.order_id, sh.name AS shipper, oi.unit_price FROM customers c LEFT JOIN orders o ON c.customer_id = o.customer_id LEFT JOIN shippers sh ON o.shipper_id = sh.shipper_id LEFT JOIN order_items oi ON oi.order_id = o.order_id ORDER BY c.customer_id; Explanation: • Adds order_items to get more details (like price) • Now the query connects 4 tables together • Still keeps all customers, even if they don’t have orders 💡 This is how real-world SQL queries are written, combining multiple tables to get full insights. 🔹 SELF OUTER JOIN Recall earlier: SELECT e.employee_id, e.first_name, m.first_name AS manager FROM employees e JOIN employees m ON e.reports_to = m.employee_id; 👉 This only returns employees who have managers Now with LEFT JOIN: SELECT e.employee_id, e.first_name, m.first_name AS manager FROM employees e LEFT JOIN employees m ON e.reports_to = m.employee_id; Explanation: • Returns all employees • If an employee has no manager: manager = NULL • Useful for identifying top-level roles (e.g., CEO) 🔹 USING CLAUSE(Cleaner Joins) When column names are the same in both tables, you can simplify your query. ⚠️ DAY 14/15 — SQL TRAP: No Index vs Index Same query. Same table. Same result. One takes 120 seconds. Other takes 0.1 seconds. The difference? One line of code. 👇 🎯 The Situation: Your table has 1 million employees. You search for one employee by name. No error. Query runs. Result comes. But it takes 2 whole minutes. 😵 Your dashboard is freezing. Users are complaining. Your manager is asking questions. All because of one missing setup. 🧠 Here's what's happening: Without an index — SQL has no idea where your data lives. So it checks every single row. One by one. All 1 million of them. This is called a FULL TABLE SCAN. Every. Single. Row. Checked. Even when only 1 row matches. With an index — SQL knows exactly where Alice is. Jumps directly to her row. 1 row scanned. Done. ✅ The Numbers: No Index → Rows scanned = 1,000,000 Time = ~120 seconds ❌ With Index → Rows scanned = 1 Time = ~0.1 seconds ✅ 1200x faster. Just from one line — CREATE INDEX idx_name ON employees(name) 💡 Real Life Example: Without index = finding a word in a book by reading every single page from start to finish. 😵 With index = opening the book's index at the back, finding the word, jumping straight to that page. ✅ Same book. Same word. One way is just exhausting. 📌 Save This Rule: → No index = full table scan = checks every row = very slow → Index = direct lookup = jumps to result = very fast → Always index columns used in WHERE, JOIN, ORDER BY → Too many indexes slow down INSERT and UPDATE — balance is key → Use EXPLAIN command to check if your query is using an index 🔑 One Line to Remember: No Index = reads entire table Index = jumps directly to answer On small tables you won't notice. On production data with millions of rows — this is the difference between a fast app and a broken one. 💬 Real Talk: Most slow dashboards and freezing reports in real companies are not caused by bad queries. They are caused by missing indexes.
