Unpopular Opinion: Junior Developers Should NOT Start With React This might sound controversial, but I see it often. Many beginners jump directly into frameworks like React or Next.js without understanding the problems those tools solve. Before React, you should understand: • How the DOM works • Event handling in JavaScript • State and data flow in vanilla JavaScript • Basic rendering logic Before using a framework, ask: Why was this framework created in the first place? React exists to solve problems like: Complex UI state management Efficient DOM updates (Virtual DOM & reconciliation) Component-based architecture Similarly, understanding concepts like Server-Side Rendering (SSR) makes frameworks like Next.js much easier to appreciate. The Same Applies to Styling Before using utility frameworks like Tailwind CSS, you should understand: Flexbox Grid Positioning The CSS box model Otherwise you end up copying classes without understanding layout behavior. The Real Point Frameworks are powerful. But they make far more sense when you understand the problems they were designed to solve. Strong fundamentals make learning any framework faster. Most JavaScript developers use async features every day — setTimeout, fetch, Promises — but the behavior can still feel confusing until the Event Loop becomes clear. JavaScript runs on a single thread using a Call Stack. When asynchronous operations occur, they are handled by the runtime (browser or Node.js), and their callbacks are placed into a queue. The Event Loop continuously checks: 1️⃣ Is the Call Stack empty? 2️⃣ Is there a callback waiting in the queue? If the stack is empty, the next callback moves into the stack and executes. Example: setTimeout(() => console.log("A"), 0); console.log("B"); Output: B A Even with 0ms, the setTimeout callback runs after the current call stack clears. Understanding this small detail explains a lot of “unexpected” async behavior in JavaScript. JavaScript Riddle for Frontend Developers 👨💻 Consider the following code: const obj = { name: "Mahesh", greet: function () { console.log(this.name); } }; Now think about these two ways of invoking the function: 1️⃣ const greet = obj.greet; greet(); 2️⃣ obj.greet(); Both appear to call the same function, but do they produce the same result? 👉 What actually happens to this in each case? 👉 Why does the behavior change? Next challenge: How would you modify #1 so that it produces the same result as #2? And one more twist to the puzzle: If we rewrite greet using an arrow function, would the behavior still be the same? Or would the output change? Think about how JavaScript determines the value of this depending on how a function is invoked. Please feel free to comment your thoughts.

Misunderstanding how JavaScript handles functions can hurt your UI performance. In JavaScript, functions are compared by reference. And in React, every render creates new function instances. So even if a function looks exactly the same, it’s actually a different reference in memory. That means when you pass a function as a prop, React sees it as a new value on every render. And if that component is wrapped with React.memo, it will still re-render. Not because React.memo doesn’t work, but because the prop actually changed. This can be solved by keeping the same function reference between renders, which is exactly what useCallback helps you do. This doesn’t mean you should use useCallback everywhere. It only matters when you need a stable function reference, like when passing props to memoized components. I’ve been using these techniques for a while, but it took me some time to really understand why they are often used together. This is a good example of how understanding the fundamentals of JavaScript can directly impact performance and behavior in React applications.
